I have this receiver and I was interested in buying a set of Niles PHD42 wall mount speakers but they are 4 ohms. I know that the mains have a selector for 4 ohm operation but I am unsure if the receiver can handle a 4ohm center? Does anyone know If you can run 4ohm front left, right and center speakers?

That beast shows power ratings down to 2 ohms. I bet it will drive them safely.

Dynamic Power per Channel MAIN, 8/6/4/2 ohms...140/170/220/320W

it is a beast! Yamaha has very clean sound and has very clean looking receivers. do you think the amplifier for the mains is different than the rest of the speaker outputs? I will try to contact yamaha tomorrow to find out for sure. I don't want to buy speakers and find that I cant use them.

A simple external amp would solve any problem with driving the speakers and could cost as little as 300 bucks.

I called Yamaha and the told me that with the ohm selector set to the 4ohm setting it changes the mains and front center to 4ohms and leaves the rears and surrounds at 8ohms. good news. thanks for the replies.

I would leave it set to 8ohm, and don't push it. If the unit goes into protection mode, just back-off a little. Most people will never push it that far.

I have a Yamaha RX-V1400. It has much less power than your unit. I used it to run 5, 4ohm, 86dB speakers for a year before ever adding an external amp. I like it loud, and the receiver never went into protection mode.

Click on this link, and read a little.

what would I gain by either switching it or just leaving it alone? I'm guessing that if it is set to 4ohm the amplifier would work harder than in 8ohm mode maybe shorten it's life?

It's a short article. You could've read it by now. So much easier than me trying to explain it to you.

I am a pecker, not a typer.:D

My 11 month-old is in the other room hooked-up to the tap at the moment.

kids gave me a break! great read!!! I'll leave it where it is. what do you think they consider low efficiency 4ohm speakers? the ones i were looking at have the following specs.

Impedance: 4 Ohms
Recommended Amplifier Power: 10W To 200W
Frequency Response: 63Hz - 21kHz +/-3dB
Sensitivity: 89dB With 2.83V Pink Noise Input, Measured At 1 Meter On Axis

Those are low efficiency for sure, but mine are 2dB lower.
Impedance: 4 Ohms
Frequency Response: 33Hz - 32kHz
Sensitivity: 87dB
Power Range: 110 - 180 Watts
