Yamaha RX-V2700 unable to connect to PC

I recently purchased a Yamaha RX-V2700, and I am able to connect via ethernet to a Router and listen to Internet Radio stations.

Unfortunately, I have had NO luck connecting to my PC. Server says 0/0, and when I go the sharing option in Windows Media Player 11, I don't have any devices to share it with.

Yamaha told me to contact Microsoft. Microsoft told me to contact HP. HP told me to contact Yamaha. I did all of these, and nothing.

Please HELP! I am desperate.......

Is the PC connected to the router or are you trying to use a direct connection from the receiver to the PC?

Both the Receiver and the PC are connected to my Linksys router.

OK, so how is everything configured?
PC gets an address automatically (DHCP) and what address range?
Can you ping the receiver from the PC?
Does the receiver require certain ports open but those ports are blocked by the firewall?
Does the receiver resolve the PC address by name or IP?
Do you have to tell the receiver the default gateway (the router)?

Etc, Etc. This is not plug and play magic. Someone could maybe help if you have any information about what the receiver setup requires and what you have tried.

OK, here we go.....
Yes, I can PING the receiver from my PC.
I'm not sure about any port openings.
Receiver has a unique IP address in the same address range as the rest of the PC's connected to my router.
Receiver found the correct default gateway.

The problem seems to be that my PC (or router or Firewall) isn't allowing the receiver to connect to it.

So where does the receiver look for music files? Is it in a specific directory like c:\music or c:\My Documents\...?

I'd first make sure that the drive and directory with music that you want to share is actually shared.

I don't want to assume anything about your knowledge of Windows networking. Do you know how to make a drive and/or folder shared?

Yes the my music is stored in the c:\My Documents\My Music... folder, and it is shared. I can see it from the other PC on my network.

From what I have researched, I need to open up WMP11.....Tools....Options....Library tab....then Configure sharing. This where I should see a list of "devices" to share my music with. The Yamaha rep told me that the AVR would probably show up as an "UNKNOWN" device, but that's ok.

At this point, it doesn't show any devices to share my media.

From the help:

The following table shows the firewall ports that must be opened if you want to share media to other devices.

Supposedly the ports are opened automatically if you are using the windows firewall but since you are using a Linksys router WF may not be on. Try allowing those ports.

the receiver does not directly access your hard drive, it requires windows media player or alternative software application to allow it access. the receiver accesses your pc by means of the ports, mentioned above

I have the same problem exactly with my 2700. I have 4 media player devices in my house. Xbox360,D-link media player, Pioneer 1140HD, and the 2700. All of them work perfectly but the 2700. It receives all the appropriate IP information but it just wont connect to my pc. Interested in the outcome of this Of Course.

File Location + WMP 11 Cfg

The files apparently must be located in the hierarchy of the Shared Music folder. I'm not sure if the Yamaha is hard-coded (in BIOS) to specifically search out a folder by that name, or if it's smart enough to reference the Registry path. If the latter, then the location can be changed. I'm investigating that now.

As for WMP 11 (which includes the requisite Windows Media Connect; pre-XP operating systems need not apply):

Under Sync, click the little downward arrow, then choose More Options > Library > Configure Sharing. Engage the Share My Media To checkbox, then click the [Settings] button at the right. Give your music folder a share name (the Yamaha will display this on a TV), then engage the Music checkbox. Also engage the Allow new devices and computers automatically checkbox. Click [OK] as many times as needed and reboot.

I've since Googled to learn how to change the Shared Music folder path in the Windows Registry (HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Shell Folders[Common Music]), but at the moment it's not specifically named Shared Music, so the Yamaha isn't seeing it.

Yamaha network receiver - firmware upgrade necessary

Everyone, after trying to get my Yamaha network receiver to connect to my PC after two months, I was finally told by Yamaha that you need to upgrade the receiver's firmware so it can "talk" to Windows Media Player 11.
You need to contact Yamaha and they will email the new firmware and installation instructions. It's simple.

After the firmware upgrade, my PC connected immediately to my Yamaha RX-N600 network receiver. It works fine for both internet radio and using Windows Media Player 11 for streaming audio files.

Note: Windows Media Player will only stream audio files in MP3 or WMA files, it will NOT stream video or graphics files.

IMHO the best feature of the network receiver is the internet radio. There are hundreds of stations and it sounds terrific.

i just purchased the 2700 last week getting ready to install it in my house in a month or so when we move in. i didn't know that when using the 2700 you wouldn't be able to watch movies stored on PC's harddrive. is this problem due to Yamaha capability or WMP not streaming the movie file?

how about VLC player? does anyone have any experience using VLC player to stream movies through the 2700?

RXV2700 / WMC Networking Success

After two long frustrating nights I was finally able to get my 2700 networked to my laptop (via Linksys wireless) so that I could access shared music files. Lessons learned and the steps I went through are posted below, however I can't vouch that they were all necessary.

1). In my conversations with Yamaha they said there was NOT a firmware update to the receiver. This is certainly contrary to a lot of posts I read here and there.
2). Make sure you can ping the IP address of the receiver, otherwise you likely have connection/firewall issues to deal with. This wasn't an issue for me.
3). Go to add/remove windows components and verify that networking services are fully installed. In my case I only had a partial installation of networking components.
4). I then updated to the latest firmware on my linksys wireless router - in my case this probably played a huge role as I had never done an update over the 3 years I've owned it.
5). I don't know that this one was required but I set my computer up as an ICS host - my real intention here was also sharing my music files with my other laptop.
6). Share the folders that contain the music you wish to access.
7). There were probably a few other things I went through but at this point I was finally able to see the receiver from WMP11, however from the receiver all I saw was 0/0. After hours of failed attempts, I then rolled back from 11 to WMP10, found an ftp site that had WMC2.0 and I installed that. I turned sharing on (WMC), gave the receiver sharing permission from WMC, rebooted both the receiver and computer and there you have it - the receiver now recognized my computer and had access to all of the folders/playlists that were shared.
