Yamaha RX-V2600 Set-up questions

Hello all,

I am quite net to the HT culture and I have a LOT of questions. Recently my wife allowed me to buy a rather modest starter system that consists of the following:

Receiver: Yamaha RX-V2600
Speakers: 4 Paradigm mini Monitors
Center: Paradigm CC-370
Sub: Paradigm UltraCube 10
Sony DVD Player
Sony VCR
Sony 42: LCD TV
Dish Network 811 HD Box

What I'm having trouble with is how I should hook everything up.

Should I run everything through the receiver?

Should I run the Dish network box directly to the TV and optical cable to the receiver?

Should I use the DVI-to-HDMI cable to run the Dish Network box to the receiver?

Thanks in advance for any advice...

Sounds like a pretty good "starter" system.

You definately need to run all audio through the receiver in order to take advantage of your new speakers, surround sound, etc. Due to the upscalling features of the Yamaha, it is probably desirable to let it do all the video switching as well. You will have a single HDMI cable from the Yamaha to the display and wont have to worry about changing display modes on the TV.

For the cable box, yes, a DVI to HDMI cable or component video cable will be fine for video. Use a digital coax or optical cable for the audio.

If you have more then 2 HDMI or DVI devices, then you will need to connect them directly to the TV's additional inputs, use a component video connection, or purchase an HDMI switch box.

Good luck with the receiver setup. Blue Jeans cable and impact acoustics are good sources for all of those cables.

I would run it all through the receiver to start and set the Yamaha RX-V2600 to output 720p via HDMI. Be sure to input your dish box to output DVI/HDMI (if available) or component at 720p output. Set your DVD player to progressive 480p output via component.

Now, if you want to do a quick and simple A-B, simply put up a still image or test pattern (if you have Avia or Digital Video Essentials) and compare the direct input to the TV vs. the Yamaha's output to the TV. It will take some cable swapping but I think you'll be pleased with the Yamaha overall.
