All-

I purchased a 2600 yesterday and also purchased HDMI to DVi convertors to go from the Yammy to my Toshiba HDCP-capable TV. When i first hooked up the receiver with my DirecTV H20 MPEG-4 via HDMI to the Yammy, I got the dreaded HDCP ERROR message. I emailed Yammy support, and they said it was my DirecTV box that has the isue with the HDMI repeater. So, I disconnected the HDMI cable from the DirecTV HD box AND from the HDMI input on the rear of the Yammy, just to be sure. Cycled power on the TV and Yammy, and still get a HDCP ERROR message. I emailed Yammy support back nd am awaiting their response. Any thoughts fellow Yammy owners?

Update:
It is the signal going from the Yamaha HDMI out to the HDMI to DVI-D converter to the DVI HDCP in of my Toshiba 51" 51h83. any thoughts?

will the satellite receiver work when connected directly to the tv?

Yamaha HDMI out

If the Yamaha is looking for an HDMI input and there is no cable connected, you could get an HDMI error.
Try using the receivers menu via HDMI out or use a component connection from Cable box to receiver and HDMI from receiver to HDTV. If either of these work, then the receiver's HDMI output is probably fine. The cable box issue is a common problem and the most likely cause.

FYI, the component connection is better anyway because it allows the Yammy to upconvert the standard cable channels to 720p or 1080i. It cannot do this with an HDMI input signal.

I used the HDMI to DVI converter to connect the satellite receiver to the DVI in of the TV and it worked great!
When i used the same exact cable setup to the HDMI out of the Yamaha to my TV, i still get HDCP ERROR. I even power cycled the devices, etc. I do not have anything going into the HDMI IN of the Yamaha when I did this. What gives? Could I have a rogue yamaha?

I actually read that post earlier today, but seem to think it may be with the Yamaha, since I am not using HDMI to the receiver for DirecTV anymore. I am using component. Any ideas?

Hi,

that sounds quite a darn good tricky way to get the best out of Yammi's upcovertion. If the above really works out, why worry about the HDMI / CABLE BOX issues anymore?
It's something to keep in mind though.

Cheers / Avliner.

Well, here is an update:
I called Yamaha, they said to contact my dealer. The dealer walked me through a few steps but still don't have HDMI to DVI. I even bought a new DVI-D cable. I think now I am going to buy the all in one HDMI to DVI-D from Monster to try out that facet. Outputing everything to Component is fine, but I paid for the video processing feature and would like it installed.
Any ideas where I should go from here?

HDMI output test

Are you able to get the onscreen menu to work over the Yamaha's HDMI output? That is a good place to start. Then verify that you can take a component video input from cable box or DVD and HDMI output from receiver.

The monster cable is a waste of money. Don't buy it unless you can take it back when it doesn't work. Also note, the Yamaha's HDMI inputs should work fine with most DVD players, it is just the cable boxes that have an issue.

I tried the GUI via HDMI and no go. I still get the HDCP ERROR. I have even taken a COMPOSITE cable and gone video out into my TV and changing the HDMI settings (480P, 720P, etc along with Upconversion on/off). Still no go. Any thoughts? Don;t worry, I plan on taking the Monster back after I am done with this testing.

This is my first post ... I've lurked and learned a lot on these forums and really appreciate all the hands-on knowledge that is represented here.

I am having an HDMI/HDCP issue with the RX-V2600. I'm pretty sure it's not the receiver and all fingers currently point to a Gefen EXT-HDTV-CAT5 HDMI extender.

I have two HDMI/DVI sources:
1) Media Center PC (ATI Radeon X1600 DVI out)
2) Samsung PIR-TS360 HD satellite and terrestrial HD receiver.

Other sources:
A variety of other component and svideo gear.

Switching between "old" standards and HD was more than a button push, which is why I decided to invest in the 2600.

Video display is a Pioneer 51" plasma driven by a PDP_RO4U media box. The media box is within standard cable distance from the display. All the source gear is 65' away; which is why I need the extender.

Each DVI/HDMI source plays perfectly through the Gefen extender.

The HDMI output of the RX-V2600 does not play; not even the setup menu is visible. (it is visible on a plain old NTSC video monitor). The HDMI related sections of the receiver manual video setup menu are grayed out - as if there is not an HDMI display device present.

When an HDMI cable is connected from the receiver's HDMI output to the input of the EXT-HDTV-CAT5 sender unit, the receiver's front panel complains of an "HDMI error / HDCP error".

Connecting the receiver directly to the PDP_RO4U using a 2m HDMI-HDMI cable I can see the setup menu on the plasma and the HDMI/HDCP error goes away.

So if logic prevails the extender appears to be the problem.

The RX-V2600 only complains of an HDMI/HDCP error when both of these are true:
1) it is connected to the EXT-HDTV-CAT5 and...
2) an HDMI video signal is output from the receiver.

Another interesting symptom is the plasma tries to sync to the signal and very occasionally displays white static.

The *only* exception to this is when the RX-V2600 switches a 720p signal from my Media Center PC (ATI Radeon X1600 DVI out). That works fine through the receiver. I assume that is because the 720p is "switched" and does not go through the receiver's scaler or output electronics.

I'm in the process of working this issue to a solution

Hopefully my experience will help others, and will post updates on progress.

Regards,
Dan

With the help of Gefen tech support I am now on a path to a solution.

There is a problem with an "undershoot" in the DDC line on the HDMI connection. This is a Yamaha problem and the solution is to apply a "mod" to the RX-V2600 per an email from a Yamaha engineer. Apparently the fix has been implemented in receivers made in their April mass production run (mine is obviously not one of them).

Dan

====================================

Snippit from a Yamaha email:

If our AV receiver will add the shottkey diode in the DDC signal, the undershoot will not appear in the DDC signal of our AV receiver.

DDC I2C

HDMI-Input [HDMI Connector]---+---[HDMI Rx IC]---+---[Micro controller]

| |

[shottkey diode]---+---[I2C Switch]---+

Added! |

+---[EEPROM for EDID]

We will implement the "Countermeasure 3-3" into our AV receiver from April mass production.

Is there anyway to get this "update" to current owners? Also, how long can it take for these April models to hit the stores?

I don't know that answer and am waiting to hear back from Yamaha and Crutchfield to find out. When I get clear direction I'll update this thread.

Anyone have any updates to this? Not being able to output to my HDTV that was bought pre-HDMI is killing me!

This sounds much like he problem I have been having for the past 6 months. I have been attempting to upgrade analog sources inputting to the 2600 using the HDMI MONITOR OUT to the DVI-I port of a BenQ PE8700+ 720p DLP Projector. But only options I get to output are "Through" (no upscaling) and 576p (I'm running PAL so it the equivalent of your 480p). Yammaha told me forcefully 6 months ago that it was the BenQ that needed an firmware update to its EDID table which is supposed to send back on DVI pin 7 the DDC signal of Basic EDID and Extended EDID the display capabilty of the projector. It appeared at first that it was programmed to send 576p (or 480p) whereas is should have been sending "I am a 720p"! BenQ claim there is no firmware upgrade for this and they are "sure" the EDID table would be correct????. Later BenQ told me that the DVI port was NEVER fully implemented ... was just VESA standard for PC connection but not for CE Standard for Broadcast Video. (Great they didnt tell me before I bought the BenQ one year ago .. or at least some time in the last year of constant hassling with them about various issues including poor de-interlacing and scaling by their onboard proprietary processor). Back to the Yammie ..

Earlier tonite I was reading a "white paper" on the incompatibity of PC based Vesa DDC and TV/Video based CE EDID .. and then I read your problem which looked very much the same a mine. Oh, by the way I got a similar result inputting to a Sharp XVZ2000 DVI port recently. The white paper suggested that the 576p (480p) may be the default where there is "no handshaking at all".

So did you get a resolution to the Yammie DDC problem? Your last post was months ago .. and things were unresolved at that time.

If NOT, Clint do you have any info on this incompatibility. I haven't yet seen a Review on the 2700, and I tested one last week into the BenQ DVI port and the Sharp DVI port and the results was identical to the 2600 ... that is cant get upscaling above 576p (480p) (becasue 720p and 1080i greyed out on the Yammie GUI)
Desparate Now.:(
