Yamaha RX-V2600 and DVD-S2500

Two Yamaha disappointments.

The RX-V2600 cannot get the audio from the HDMI input and direct it to the speakers (see tiny footnote on page 119 of the manual). I had to add a separate COAX digital audio cable from DVD to RX. Now the surround sound is awesome. The auto setup on the surround sound is a nice feature.

The Yamaha DVD-S2500 I bought from etronics will have to be returned. It pauses then skips sections of the DVD movie when going from one chapter to the next. Is Yamaha flakey or am I just unlucky?

Yamaha DVD-S2500 seems ok

A Qtip and isopropyl alcohol removed some marks on my DVDs. Now the DVD-S2500 doesn't skip. I don't know why the same dvd didn't skip on my other dvd player. Anyhow, I am now happy with the entire setup. Except for the minor irritation at buying an expensive HDMI cable and the RX-V2600 not being able to direct the audio from the HDMI input to the speakers. That was easily fixed by adding a coax digital audio cable.
The surround sound is awesome (L/R old Vandersteen model 2, center/back surrounds/bipolar surrounds Mordaunt-Short Avant 905C, 902, 903, subwoofer Velodyne F).
The Panasonic PT-AE900U projector is totally wonderful, even on a white wall without a screen (so far). Brilliant colors, good resolution, 108" diagonal.

HDMI from DVD-S2500

Hmmm. I think you are right. I was assuming that the RX-V2600 wasn't able to extract audio from the HDMI input but it looks like the problem is, as you say, the DVD-S2500 only has optical and coax digital audio out. I'm getting the impression that HDMI is not fully supported by these "relatively high end" units. Anyway, yes, I am getting amazing video and also amazing audio. I hate to quibble about the HDMI limitations.

Hdmi

They are still playing with the final format of HDMI. They are currently up to version 1.2. V1.3 will incorporate DTS and DD on HDMI. Right now HDMI only does digital video, SAVD, and 8 discreet channels of audio.

I was a little upset when I heard this. So much for finishing a product. Sounds like a Microsoft product.

I'm glad I purchased my HT system before all this HDMI stuff became part of mainstream. I like component video. The cables are a lot cheaper. :D I have not seem a setup where I want to make the move to digital video. I've tried a DVI to component comparison, and a HMDI to component comparison. HDMI vs analog only showed a small difference in colour. The picture clarity did not change (this was on a LCD flat panel TV). Not worth the extra bucks.
