Yamaha RX-V1700 audio

Can I use this strictly as a stereo receiver for audio or would anyone advise against that?

I can get a good deal on one of these $400.00, but I don't need all of the functionality. I only need to play music. Thoughts?

Yup, about 3 ways and a damn good one....you can use on stereo sound setting with sub, straight stereo setting without any added enhancements and, I believe it has "pure stereo" which takes all other electronics out of the mix, including a sub....the unit also has pre-outs for inputting another amp....I wouldnt pay more than $300 in good condition as 4 year old unit now....and does not offer much in terms of HDMI connections....manual attached which will spell out all capabilities...

A decent receiver

I have been using this receiver for 4 years and it works pretty good the only thing I dont like about it is the volume control it from medium volime to blasting I am using external amps on my front three channels the receiver drives the surrounds and persences channels my speakers are Paradigm studios and a sub 12 the receiver good sound quaity but not great and has decent power 130wpc plus up converts video through its hdmi output that I only for video I personally like fiber optic for the audio And I would say in my opion that my surround system rocks

If you can find it factory refurbished or mint cond. used, the RX-V2600 is a superior choice; not only is it's pre-amp section superior to anything before/after it objectively(due to reasons not relevant here), it has a very powerful stereo amp section. It works superbly as a dedicated pre-amp and very good as a stereo amp.
