All,

I just recently updated my set up and I was wondering if I need or should add a seperate amp into the mix. I have heard a lot of good things about the emotiva line in this forum so I have a few questions.

1. Do I need to add a separate amp to my set up?
2. If so, do I need a 2 channel or multichannel?
3. Will the EMP speakers benefit by having a seperate amp?
4. Any other brands other than emotiva? budget 500 -700$

Thanks

No, you do not need an amplifier, but will it help, maybe. You will gain the most benefit from an amp if you play your music/movies at high volume levels, at low levels your receiver will have plenty of power. Without knowing what all speakers you have, it's hard to say what you would need, but adding a 2 ch. amp would free up your receiver to give extra power to all the other channels.

One thing you may consider. I believe the RX-v1700 has the same Preamplifier as the RX-v2700. I could be wrong but if it does. Audioholics review of this amp drew attention to this as one of the weak points of the receiver "The RX-V2700 preamp output drive was a bit disappointing and a step backwards from its predecessor" "Outputs Deliver nearly 3Vrms output before the receiver shut down, but FFT distortion becomes very high once output exceeds 1.25Vrms"

Just a heads up on that weakness of these receivers.
