Yamaha RX-V1600, or RX-v2500?

I am looking at purchasing either of these two receivers. I have decided against the 2600, as that only really buys me upscaling, which is not a huge issue for me right now.

So then, I'm looking at these other two models. It's my understanding that these three models are all pretty similar in terms of feature set, with the 1600 offering HDMI upconversion, (rather than upscaling), whereas the 2500 doesn't seem to have any digital (HDMI or DVI) outs.

HOWEVER.... what I'm mostly interested in, since the feature sets are basically similar, with the exceptions above, is the relative quality of the preamp/amp sections in these units. These also seem fairly closely matched, but I've read different things that the upgraded DAC's in the 2600 sound better, etc. These seem to be the same DAC's in the 1600.

In addition, the amp numbers on these units are all a little different.

Given the minimal price differences between these two, similar feature sets... which one of these offers better sound performance? That is the factor I want to base my decision on.

If you don't need HDMI switching, then the RX-V2500 is a great buy. I have heard rumors about minor amp improvements in the 2600, but no difinitive reviews yet. My understanding is that the Yamaha RX-V2500 has a higher power rating then the 1500 (and 2600 vs. 1500) because a larger power supply and higher quality components are used. On the 1600, your money is going towards the HDMI feature instead of a better power supply and amp components.

I would buy the 2500 now, and upgrade in a few years when HDMI actually works and the new HD audio DSPs are supported on receivers.

If you are patient, AH will complete their 2600 review in the next couple weeks but I don't think it would answer your question about the 1600.

I believe the 1600 has the same Burr Brown DAC's as the 2600. I own the 1600 and did lots of research before I purchased, and I'm glad I got what I did. The 1600 has plenty of power and sounds great.

Save money and buy the older but highly rated 2500. I have one and it is nice. Has component in/out for great video performance and lots of power. Put the money saved on recv'r towards spkr's! The number one link in my opinion. Sure acoustics and other things are a concern but a great pair of speakers will sound good in almost any environment.

The YAMAHA RX-V1600 can be had on ebay in the range of $700-750 (includes shipping). Any cautions to be observed with an ebay purchase?

Make sure the seller has a high rating based on many sales. I would also make sure they offer insurance and require a signature on delivery.

Look up Canal HiFI on ebay, just ordered my RX-V2500 from them for $590 shipped, brand new, with a store receipt, they are an authorized Yami dealer, and had it to my door (from NY to NC) in 3 days.

I got mine in Ebay the first or second day they were available on Ebay, I got it from an authorized Yamaha dealer who happened to be selling it on Ebay. I paid I think $860 shipped for it. I got a store receipt for it as well so if there are any warranty issues, I'm covered. But just look for a seller with high feedback rating and if possible a get it from someone who offers a warranty.
