Yamaha RX-V1500 YPAO Question

I've had my system EQ setup with YPAO for a while now but I've noticed that it could use some tweaking. If I'm using the Parametric EQ setting how do I go back and tweak some of the frequencies? Do I switch to Graphic EQ? Even though all the frequencies are set to 0db as default in that option?

The problem I'm having is that the receiver doesn't have a test tone for the frequencies (63hz, 160hz, 400hz, 1khz, 2.5khz, 6.3khz, 16khz) so I can't calibrate the EQ manually. Or can I? Theoretically, if I want the flatest response in the EQ, I'd calibrate each frequency volume to match all the way around the sytem using an SPL meter, right? What should I use to get a test tone for the frequencies? I'm a mess when it comes to equalizers so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have a 2500 and initially setup using ypao. I was not pleased with sound. The auto setup was great for distance, level, and other basic set and forget settings but the eq was making things sound...well, not so good. So I went to the parametric eq via the gui and set everything to flat. No gain on ant freq. Then I boosted or cut gain on each freq until I liked the sound. I then saved the setting. I listen to the custom setting for music and the ypao setting for movies. Not sure what you mean by graphic eq. Perhaps that is how the 1500 differs from my 2500 in the settings options. Basically I used the eq as you would an old fashioned slide control unit. As far as test tones are concerned...does the 1500 have a test tone? This would work for setting proper levels on all spkr's but not individual test tones at different freq's. I would invest in the Avia test disc or another reputable test disc with different freq test tones and use in conjunction with spl meter. While I have your attention...I too have a 750 dvd changer. Is yours a bit slow in functions? loading, change disc, etc? just curious.

While I suppose you can use the included Parametric EQ as a "tune to taste" function, I would not trust myself to do that.

A better alternative would be to experiment with the various YPAO modes and then, when you find on that is in the ball-park, go to the parametric EQ setings and ease back the gain and cut to lessen the effects. Then see how you like that versus no EQ at all.

Setting EQs by ear is possibly a good idea for people who voice speakers for a living, but will likely just end up creating a very non-linear response (though perhaps pleasing) for most people. Certain cube speaker manufacturers make a lot of money by making non-linear, but pleasing loudspeaker systems.

I prefer a relatively 'accurate' frequency response.

Yeah the Yamaha DVD player I have is pretty slow but I've gotten used to it. It works like a charm though and plays Divx as well as all audio cds and can also be set to region free. It doesn't do dual layer, though, which is my only real complaint. There is another model by Yamaha that plays literally everything. I saw a post on it here somewhere in a thread called 'Yamaha players: the lowdown' i think. I think I'm going to hold off on getting another dvd player until the hd dvd madness is released.

Yes, I'd much rather have accurate sound than personal taste. I'm trying to get the best sound that the room will allow with the gear iv'e got. I've been recently doing room treatment and a whole lotta receiver tweaking. Lately, I've gotten the best sound out of my room that i've ever gotten before and am extremely happy about that but i KNOW it can be better.

The RX-V1500 won't allow me to go back and tweak PEQ settings once they've been initialized. I was thinking of getting an audio test cd with a whole bunch of frequencies and testing out the frequencies that my receiver has an adjustable eq on (like using the cd as the test tone for each speaker) and then using my spl meter to get each level calibrated on each speaker and then translating the db gains or losses to the graphic eq (manual eq) on the receiver, corresponding to the spl measurements of each frequency tone for each individual speaker (WHEW!) If I did that, would the results be accurate or would I be off? What's a good disc to start off? Isn't there something I can download with a bunch of short tone clips?

Thanks for the help guys!

Yamaha EQ

My lower end yamaha (HTR-5860) also has the graphic EQ mode. I think this is intended to EQ only the center channel speaker for a better tonal match with the mains. Using this feature disables the PEQ settings.

I used to have that receiver before I upgraded. On the RX-V1500 the GEQ allows for eq'ing of all the speakers, not just the center.

Unless things have changed since I owned the RX-V1400, you cannot manually edit the PEQ settings. If you decide to do manual EQ, you are limited to 1/3-octave GEQ and the YPAO PEQ settings are not used.

The same is still true for the 1500. You can toggle between GEQ and PEQ but, and blame it on my untrained ear, I have yet to be able to match or better the sound quality the YPAOPEQ automatically sets up.
