I am new to this and appreciate any help so here goes:

I am trying to hook up my (Time Warner) Pioneer digital cable box, along with my Sony DVP-NS50P DVD (although the DVD seems much easier), to my Yamaha RX-V1400 Receiver and have just figured out that this receiver does not accept coaxial digital audio output. I called the cable company and they suggested a Scientific Altantic DVR 8300 cable box with an optical audio output. O.K. fine I will get the new box. My TV is a Mitsubishi V-4003R which only has one S-Video input. My quesitons are:

1) When hooking up the cable box to the receiver does it make a huge difference to have digital audio output (I am assuming it does) and will the optical digital input (toslink cable) be acceptable or does the "DTV component" video up conversion on the receiver come into play here? Also what exactly is the "DTV" compenent video input for?

2) Secondly, I don't really understand the digital audio output on the receiver. Do I hook up anything additional to the TV besides the S-Video cable and my red and blue monster audio cables (please don't make fun of me, I bought them a long time ago) to get the proper digital audio/video signals I am looking for?

Again I appreciate any help, this forum has already taught me some valuable things,

Steve

The RX-V1400 does accept coaxial digital audio signals. The're on the back in the lower corner, labeled COAXIAL.

DTV is a label. It just means digital TV but you can ignore it. As long as you keep the connections from one source going to the things labeled the same on the back of the RX-V1400, you're okay. I don't really understand your first question though. Audio and video are separate.

The digital output optical jacks on the RX-V1400 are if you want to send the audio somewhere else, besides speakers. That's why they're labeled CD-R and MD/TAPE (for recording).

Joshua,

Thank you very much for replying. The RX-V1400 does have three coaxial digital audio inputs in the bottom left hand corner as you mentioned, but the problem I am having is that I don't see a cable TV input. It appears from my manual that it only has an optical digital input for the cable TV box and not a coaxial input. The three digital audio inputs in the bottom left hand corner are labeled CD, DVD & DVR/VCR 2. I am hoping that a I am wrong and don't have to get the new cable box. Right now I have the S-video ouput hooked up the TV and the DVD works great (S-Video and the coaxial audio output hooked up to the receiver). I am trying to get the same from my digital cable box and it doesn't seem possible with the hook-ups I have. (I wrote a longer, more detailed response, but for some reason was "timed out" and had to log in again). Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Steve

Those inputs should be assignable in the reciever's menu. That is at least, if it is the same as my 1500, and I believe it is.

My cable box is a dvr. I connected the audio(coax) to dvr input. Problem solved.

Nomo Sony,

You are correct. Those coaxials are assignable in the menu. I was able to assign the CD coaxial input to CAB TV and solve the problem that way. The movie channels are in surround now and sound great. Thank you very much for your reply. I plan to continue reading/posting here as I have much to learn and hopefully will be able to help someone else someday.
