Yamaha RX-V1400 or RX-V1500

I am looking to purchase my first real home theater AV reciever. I am going to using it probably 80% for movies. So other than 10 more watts per channel what is the difference between the RX-V1400 and the RX-V1500.

Is the extra price paying for a new model worth it in this case or should the RX-V1400 be good enough?

Thanks

I bet they sound identical! I would go for the 1400. I have the 1400. You may find that you want more power, as I did. So save the extra money for an amp later. I use an Adcom 7605.

I guess it depends on how much extra you you would need to pay. I got my 1500 for $600 (with Yamaha warranty). If you're looking for a cost differential, here's mine: If I could have got the 1400 for less than $500 I would have gone in that direction. I at this point have no regrets. The RS-232C port, the better remote, and visual "wow" of the pretty blue light in pure direct mode, to me are worth 100 bucks to me.

you mind me asking where you got it for $600 w/ yamaha warranty? i found some online places but I don't know if they are yamaha resalers and offer the warranty.

There is a small chain of stores up here in the Wisconsin/Illinois area called American TV and Appliance. I did a little haggling on the price but I was surprised to get that price.
You cannot get an RXV over the internet without losing the warranty. Even the authorized dealers have the disclaimer "in store only" on their web sites.

According to this site http://www.eastwoodhifi.com.au/rx-v1500.htm the RXV-1500 does sound better. :D
Strange, Nowhere does it say anything about any side by side comparision. The author is going simply by his memory of two recievers ago? Bunk! I seriously doubt that even side by side any one could tell the difference between the 1400 and the 1500, extra 10 watts or not.

YPAO sucks in RXV1400

Well, the only thing i expect the 1500 would be better than the 1400 is the YPAO setting and a manual parametric equalizer. In the 1400 the YPAO is extremely irregular, inconsistent and inaccurate. I have run a lot YPAO tests (with same speakers, same settings, same microphone position, same everything) and every time i get different results (some of them really out of reality). What the hell is happening?. I don't know.

So i've decided to do everything manual; the only problem is that i can't tweak the parametric equalizer (it's automatic).

In all reality the 1500 still has some issues with regard to the YPAO. The other night I ran the same procedure 3 times in a row each time it was at least slightly different. I learning to use it to get close and make slight modifications from there.

ok... now a curve ball

aroud the same price there is the Denon 2805. I like it because it has 3 component inputs compared to the yamahas. any input on this beast?

I also found out that the 1500's remote can do macros and the 1400's can't.

Went with Denon

I was looking at the Yamaha 2400 and Denon 3805. They were very close but the three component-in connections was the deciding factor for me and I purchased the 3805. But the new 1500 and 2500 have three component-in connections so that factor has been eliminated.

the 2500 has three component-in connections but the 1500 still has 2

i think because of this factor i will lean towards the Denon 2805. I wish a receiver under $1000 offered a DVI in/out. that would be awesome!!!

I had the htr5790 for 3 weeks and returned it and bought a rxv-1500 because of a few more features in the 1500. To my ears both these units sounded identical. The extra features on the remote and the 232 port made it worthwhile to me. The 5790 is supposed to be the twin to the 1400.I liked the sound of both units.
