Is it possible and technically correct to hook a 6.1 speaker system up to this receiver since it is "rated" as a 7.1?

The only difference is the second rear surround between the two types. Can the receiver be told to operate as a 6.1 system?

I don't know to much about stuff ,just learning so any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

5=surround/right
6=surround back/left
7=surround back/right
.1=sub out

With this in mind, what is your 6th speaker?

According to Yamaha and several other manufacturers connect a single surround back speaker to the left surround back binding post.
Double check your OSD to make sure there aren't any necessary adjustments. (surr. back x1 or surr. back x2)

That is correct. Connect to the left surround back for 6.1.

I am lost as to why you need 6.1. Will it not be unbalaced? Surely better to join both souround back posts together with the 6th speaker in the back middle.

Yes that is correct, I do only have a 6.1 speaker system.

I will check the OSD to see if it mentions a single or double back surround option also.

My own common sense though tells me the same as what was already asked though about it being unbalanced "if" there is no selection for 1 or 2 back surrounds.

rgriffin25 you had mentioned Yamaha and others recommend hooking up this way. Can you remember where you might have read that? Is it on their website?

Thanks for all the good feedback guys.
