I have a chance to buy one of these for $300-400. It was over $3K in 2000. I know little about all technicals other than the the Onkyo 805 was groundbreaking last year and the Yamaha RX v663 and v863 are also very very good.

Is the RX-V1 outdated versus the new stuff?

Lucky you

Hi,

The RX-V1 is an excellent receiver. It is outdated, but for the price, it will be perfect for a second room.
If you can also find the Onkyo 805, that will be a double score.
It will be perfect for your main home theater room with all the latest audio codecs.
If I was you, I'll buy the Yammy RX-V1 and do a search for the Onkyo 805, or 876.
The RX-V1 have the best DACS ever made, the Burr-Brown PCM-1704 x 10 dacs. It is 62 pounds of pure audio musical delight. Don't miss this deal. I will buy it even at $1,000 or so, because I know of it's sound quality and tremendous power.

But you do need another receiver for the latest gadgets. Onkyos are an excellent value.
