Yamaha RX V1 no tone

My Yamaha RX V1:
I turn it on, send the test tone via remote to each speaker. Occasionally one or both rear speakers exhibit no tone. When the tone cycles around a 2nd time and I increase the volume level using the remote control, the silent speaker will "come alive" and remain on for the duration of the use of the system. This doesn't occure every time I start up...only occasionally. A repair tech says the unit needs a new "mono board".

Does the diagnosis sound correct?

Do you have a test DVD to try this with? See if it exhibits the same problems with that test disc and SPL meter. Record the volume settings of the trim for each channel.
Do this a few times over the course of a week and see if it stays the same or it drifts.

How old is this receiver?

This receiver is about...6 years old. I bought it used. When it works it sounds great.

It is possible that a board went out, or has a cold joint that is opening and closing.
I had a new DVD player lost memory after the labor warranty ran out.
