Hi,

I have followed most of AV Receiver forum and reviews here. Thought i would post a thread asking you guys on new receiver i m going to purchase for new year.

I saw an other thread asking same question but it didn't answer my need.

I had been to few stores nearby to get a look and feel of few receiver like Onkyo,Denon,Yamaha & Marantz.

I narrowed down to Yamaha Rx-A1050 based of the build quality and yamaha presence in music industry as there weren't much reviews on RX-A1050.

I am yet to order my Yamaha Aventage RX-1050 from crutch field or BHPhoto. I just had a chat with crutch field and BHPhoto product specialist they seem to suggest to try Marantz SR7009 for the same price as Yamaha.

Yamaha RX-A1050 - 1199$
Marantz SR-7009 - 1199$

I did look up few forums on Marantz internal which really didn't impress comparing yamaha's internals. I know there are people who suggest Audyssesy XT32 is better than Ypao. Need your suggestion on which one is a better buy. I saw denon's and Onkyo but want to try something different from denon/onkyo as i had denon old avr-1604 and retired recently.

People tend to have subjective opinion on both but looking for an advice from what is practical and logical.

Also My curiosity is whether HDAM in marantz makes it really sound so called better or is it just a name marantz has been using to promote there products. I really couldn't audition both of the receiver anywhere so i will have to buy based on your suggestions.

Practically speaking the 7009 is a better buy right now due to the recent price drop. Unless you must have the HDCP 2.2 that everyone seem to want but don't need. My recent install of a SR7009 powers a Silver 8 5.2 system. The 8's are 4 ohms rated but the 7009 has no problem driving them in a large room and I felt no need to turn the volume up higher than -20. The 1050 should be quite powerful too but sorry I am one of those who believe YPAO is not as good as Audyssey XT32 and Sub EQ HT, especially if you have two subs.

The SR7009 should really be compared to the Yamaha RX-A3040.

Both are solid performers and it will boil down to the feature set. People have been arguing over which EQ system is better but there never has been a conclusive documented study done as to which EQ system is better. If return shipping is free, buy both, compare and return the runner up. This coming from a person who has two Yamaha AVRs, one I bought second hand for my secondary system because I needed the extra inputs.

Thanks Peng and 3db,

I did research some more on both on the feature set as suggested. Only difference i see is marantz is 125watts/channel with 9 channel amp and yamaha is 7 channel amp. Otherwise in everyway yamaha RX-1050 looked good from DAC,DSP,HDCP 2.2 & so. i know i will not use HDCP2.2 or 4k Ultra HD for my room size i don't think i need 125watts/channel and i just have 5.1 setup so i won't use 9 channels.

The one thing bothering me from purchasing yamaha is whether current feedback amplifier of marantz is better in sound quality or both sound same in pure mode. As far as audyssey vs ypao i dont have 2 subs as peng said and i am ok with YPAO. I m really impressed with yamaha build quality and symmetric amp layout which is found in some high end gear like denon X7200wa reciever.

Ignoring room calibration does marantz sound different or both are in same line in pure mode.

In my experience, once you get to the level of the RX-A10X0, Marantz SR-6XXX, Denon AVR-4XXX and above, they all sound pretty much the same if compared properly and used well within their limits. Some golden ears will hear, or think they hear differences but most, if not all, will fall apart if they can's see which one is playing. Some claimed Marantz has a "warmth" that Denon and Yamaha don't, but some claimed the opposite. I have experience in all 3 and I know they are basically all neutral sounding, the way they should be. I am sure their goals are the same too, that is, try to make their amps approach truly hi fidelity sound.

When you mean pure mode, you mean by passing any and all DSP? IF that is the question my response to you is that neither model has an advantage over the other in sound. IHO I would say that they sound more the same than different until you begin straining the amplifiers. Then differences in sound will occur.

I recently purchased the RX-A1050 and am very happy with it so far. I can't compare it to the Marantz directly but I can say the unit sounds great, has excellent processing, and I found the setup to be user friendly.

Originally, I purchased a Pioneer Elite receiver but ended up returning it for something more future proof. With ATMOS, DTS-X, HDCP 2.2 ect. the RX-A1050 fit the bill and I was able to snag one at a good price. The Yamaha YPAO did an excellent job in my room, very comparable to the advanced MCACC that the Pioneer was equipped with. The only weak side of the YPAO is that I don't believe it EQs down to 20Hz, it may stop short around 32Hz or so.

Overall, very satisfied with the receiver. I am currently running a 5.1.2 configuration and couldn't be happier with how it performs.
