Hi everybody!
I currently own a Yamaha RX-797, on the back of the unit is an impedance selector switch. The text above the switch reads that the 4ohm switch should be in the left position for speakers of 4ohms or above and the switch should be set to the right postion for speakers of 6ohms or higher. My speakers are 8ohm Definitive Technology Studiomonitor 55's. Can somebody please tell me what side I need to choose? I'm very confused and would love and easy answer.
Thanks!
Adam

Leave it in the standard position...which is 4 ohm's
It's a very long story but it's only there to cover someone's ***,
Doesn't actually have any worthwhile purpose.

There's already a billion threads on this...have a look

Yeah, already a billion threads on this....
and the one I trust most is right here on AH, and that is to set it at the 6ohm or 8ohm setting.

For 8 Ohm speakers it should be on 8 Ohms. In fact, in probably almost all cases it should be on 8 Ohms period.

Can't find the AH article on this exact subject which details why you want it that way, but suffice to say this is an option that should not exist IMO.

The only options are 4 ohm or 6 ohm.

To the OP, read this:
Setting the A/V Receiver Impedance Selector Switch — Reviews and News from Audioholics
That should almost certainly point you in the right direction.

IF I remember correctly (it's been a while since I've read the link), I think most modern receivers simply limit the output when you set it to 4ohms. Basically it's just a protection circuit engaged to keep from over-demanding the amp.

On older equipment (I think tube amps in particular), it is most likely a different story. You get the max power transfer when the output impedance of the amp matches that of the input impedance of the speakers. And, you would never want your input impedance to be less than the output. I recently built an ST-70, and it has 2 taps available on the output transformers to let you choose 4 or 8 ohm (not simply a protective circuit, but rather a way to try to match impedance for best performance).

Well now, this looks pretty straightforward.

My speakers are 8ohm Definitive Technology Studiomonitor 55's.
OK, you've got 8 ohm speakers. What else do you need to know?

Can somebody please tell me what side I need to choose? I'm very confused and would love and easy answer.
What's so confusing? Is there a question as to whether 8 ohms is higher than 6 ohms?
