Yamaha RX-496 Receiver won't power speakers

We purchased a Yamaha RX-496 receiver and one set of Paradigm Studio 40 speakers last year. Placed in a large room and was extremely happy with sound output, ect..

We decided, since the room was quite large to add another set of studio 40 speakers to the family mix. When we turn volume to 50% the Yamaha shuts off, due to an impedance problem.

We are told the Rx-496 can't put out enough juice for the speakers. There are no pre-outs on this receiver for an AMP. The only alternative would be to run a separate power AMP. Then we get into the situation with two separate volume controls. What was suggested to us is to move up to the Yamaha RX-777, this way if we still need more juice, we can add a pre-amp. We are only interested in a straight audio receiver, not an A/V receiver. But we also don't want to get into too much power where we turn the Paradigm's into toast.

Any suggestions of what would be a great marriage with two sets of Paradigm Studio 40 speakers? Would the RX-777 satisfy our needs? If not, what would?

Ps. We love to crank our music, on occasion.

Thanks....

Check out Yamaha MX-1000/MX-1 on e-bay, they are massive class A amp delivering 260W rms into 8ohms and 1000W into 1ohms and can run three pairs of speakers simeltaneously and unlike your poor RX-496 this would provide you with all the juice you need to run your Paradigm but do be warned that too much juice would bring out the drivers from your speakers as many have discovred much to their chagrin.

You are welcome,

The only problem is that the RX-496 being a low end receiver, I dont expect it to have pre outs so powering the MX-1000/MX-1 would be a problem.

Hi Yamahaluver!

FYI....We did update our original message and changed it a bit.

We were going to just upgrade to the RX-777 not to add the MX-1000. Your right, there are no pre-outs on the 496, but there are on the RX-777.

Is it possible that we can still run into the impedance problem if we upgrade to the RX-777? If the RX-777 is not going to work out, what would you recommend? We are only interested in purchasing a new product, and right now it seems that the RX-777 is the most powerful that Yamaha offers in an AM/FM Stereo receiver.

If you think we would still run into the impedance problem at this point, somewhere down the road would we be looking at adding a pre-amp?
