Yamaha remote control issues!

It seems that my remote control is not responding to any commands unless I stand 2ft away from my component. I own a Yamaha CX-A5100 and it sits in an AV cabinet with metal mesh doors that you can see through. My sitting area is 14ft from my cabinet and have always been able to use the remote with the doors closed. Now, I have to open the door on the AV cabinet for the Yamaha to respond to commands. I have changed the batteries on the remote and even unplugged the CX-A5100 for 15 minutes to see if would reset. I'm pretty sure the IR sensor is not working properly and the further away I stand, the worse it gets. Yamaha has not responded regarding this issue. Just looking for any ideas or do I just need a new remote?

Does it work fine when doors open?

Its possible you have moved the yamaha slightly so the mesh blocks more of the signal? i dont know, was just a thought.

How did you contact Yamaha?

Make sure to press the Receiver button at the top before trying to control it- it's possible that the Source button was pressed.

It could be set to operate with the wrong code set, too- most Yamaha have this feature because it makes controlling multiple pieces of the same brand without needing to isolate the IR receivers.

If you want to make setup easier, enter the IP address with /setup at the end on a smart phone, computer or tablet. Much of the setup can't be performed using the remote.

I have to stand 2ft away from the unit with the doors open or closed for it to respond to commands. Also the the IR sensor on the unit is in the middle of the mesh door with nothing else blocking it. Its worked that way forever. kinda weird? I moved to unit some but nothing.

I contacted Yamaha through email. When I press the source button, its says receiver and if I press it again it says AV2. I've tried it both ways and nothing. AV2 is what I have cable TV connected to. I've never messed with the remote codes as I only have one Yamaha so I'm a bit confused. It responds to commands only if I'm 2ft away with the doors open or closed.

Do you have a universal remote or another yamaha remote that might work to test if its the remote thats the problem or if its the AVR IR reciever?

Try different batteries- the typical symptom of bad batteries is reduced range.

No, I only have the one remote. I guess if push comes to shove,

No, I only have the one remote. I guess if push comes to shove, I can always take it to the home theater store I bought it from

Some tv remotes etc. can be set to control simple AVR commands if you have some old laying around or the one you use can.
I have a TV and Bluray remote that I could program to turn on and off and control the volume but they can't control DSP modes and other configurations that I like to use. I like to use the Yamaha's scene modes based on what I'm watching and control sub levels. Maybe I just need a new one.

Any command you can use from another remote will let you know at which end the problem is.

You can download the Yamaha app and control it with a computer, tablet or smart phone.

If the store is close, you could take the remote and see if it can control their equipment- if it does, you'll know something is causing it to not work at home.

Do you have direct sunlight coming into the room and onto the face of this piece? That can cause big problems with IR. If you changed light bulbs, turn the lights off and if the remote works, it's the bulbs that are causing these problems.

Did anyone drop the remote control on the floor or damage it somehow?

I think the easiest way to find out if the actual remote is defective is to use another Yamaha or universal remote.
