YAMAHA RECIEVER - AM I dumb or what??

Hello everybody!.

New to the forums.

However I am not new to audio - so I am embarassed to admit my problem!

I have been playing with home cinema for the last year.

I am happy at the moment with my 720p projector.
I recently bought a yamaha dsp ax620 a/v receiver off ebay.
It was local so i was able to pick it up.

I am currently using it by providing six analog outputs to its "6channel" inputs.

THis works great as most of my viewing is using mp4 with AAC audio.

However I needed to connect to its optical in recently.

Upon doing this and providing it with an AC3 source, the DTS light comes on - but no sound?

I have checked and rechecked any configuration on my media player ( PLex on a Mac)

I borrowed another computer and it does the same?

If anyone knows this receiver, is there some button I am missing??

Or- does the decoding circuitry ever become faulty?

If anyone can make any sense of this and has any advice - many thanks

Do you have the analog input and the optical assigned to the same source in the receiver? I'm guessing yes. You may have to somehow select which input is active.

If you didn't get a manual with the receiver, you can probably find a PDF on Yamaha's site. Their manuals are pretty good at explaining how the settings work and how to make connections.

You could also try a different input channel (source) and see if there is a difference. If you know the Mac is outputting a signal on the optical cable, then there must be some setting you are missing on the receiver. There could be something faulty but I doubt it. Internally, amplifiers are the first thing to wear out. If the optical jack appears undamaged, the receiver should work.

Manual link.

As jliedeka said earlier, you probably need to assign or activate the optical jack to a proper setting. All of my optical/coaxial jacks are assignable to different settings.

BTW - if you're using the multi channel in, the optical jack you've plugged into is probably already "hot" under a different input setting. Try using the optical jack and scroll through all the different inputs and see if one produces the input material. I'm guessing it's probably DVD or TV.

Many thanks to the people who have replied.

I,m pretty sure I have done as you have suggested, - but I shall go over it again to make absolutely sure and then post my result.

thanks again

Most Yamaha receivers that I have seen that have a 6-CH input have a button called 6-CH Input that you hit to listen to those analog ins. It does not matter which video source you have selected the 6-CH audio overrides its audio.

When you turn off the 6-CH input, then the audio for the selected video source will play (as long as you have connected the optical or coax digital cable to the right input on the back of the receiver. :) )

i think i am dumb

Thanks wesley,

Your're right = thats how the Yam works.

However, when I disengage '6 channel input" then no sound appears even though I have an optical cable connected??

I'll keep searching for that elusive button.- come to think of it, there might even be a ''reset to default'' switch in case that might be worth it

It sounds like you are connecting a computer as the sound source.

Perhaps your computer settings are incorrect? Maybe you have to set the soundcard to output to the optical connection?
