I am trying to put together my first HT system and could use some advice.

I've read Yamahaluvers posting regarding matching the receiver with speakers that will compliment its sonic signature. My speakers are Atlantic Technology 4.5's. My research has led me to consider the Yamaha RXV 1400 and the Onkyo TX SR601 (but still open to suggestions). I would welcome some feedback as to which receiver would best compliment my Atlantic Tech speakers.

Advice on a DVD player would also be welcome. I'd like to keep the price $300 or below.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, love the site.

IMHO having heard Atlantic speakers before I would reccomend you go with the Onkyo but do audition the Yamaha/Atlantic combo as you may like it contrary to my impressions.

For DVD players Yamaha DVD-S540 has really good video quality and is available for under $300.

I am afraid that I will have to disagree with Yamahaluver on this subject. I think Yamaha receivers are good for all speakers. Only consideration here should be power matching as there are a few very hard to drive speakers so low end 70W receivers may not do justice for them.

My experience with a low end Yamaha receiver shows that the amp section is very neutral and uncolored, among other 'thumb-ups'. It is these qualities that make Yamaha good to all speakers since they don't add any signature to the signal. Isn't this what 'hifi' is all about -- fidelity?

I have owned PSB Image 2B, PSB Stratus Mini, ProAc Response 1S, and Dynaudio Contour Special 25, all legendary monitors among audiophiles. They have significant different sonic signatures but ALL of them sound fantastic with Yamaha.

I would buy RX-V1400 first and then, if possible, audition different brand speakers to choose the best. Otherwise go with Dynaudio :) Bottom line is as long as you don't hook up booze with Yamaha you won't be too far off.

abe,

You are absolutely correct about the charecteristic of Yamaha receivers, but it this exact attribute which make so many comment negatively on Yamaha declaring it to be bright and hollow. Sadly there are many speakers out on the market which due to the industry trend tend to be on the brighter side so as to compensate for warmer or duller sounding amps and this exagerrates Yamaha's trademark tonal signature and therefore the poor opinion. I have always liked Yamaha for its sound and will continue to do so so long they dont change it. If you like the sound of their receivers, then their power amps like the MX-1000/MX-1 blow away even their very best including the Z-1.

I will forever be a Yamaha + Definitive Fan.

Once I have a full time job, with some $$$ I a gonna get the RX-Z9, Definitive BP2002tl, CLR3000, four BPX's, SM350s for presence channels, and a Supercube I for that little extra LFE in movies. All this and whatever DVDS2X00 ieee1394 DVD player comes out.

Oh and not to mention a 70in Grand Vega

I'm thinking of the RXV1400 myself as this is the most cost effective upgrade availbale to me. I plan on mating this unit to PSB's 4Ts or 5Ts . I'm just curious how that marriage would turn out?
