Yamaha R-N1000A Pre Out to Adcom GFA 555

I just purchased a Yamaha R-N1000a to replace an R-N303. I was using the line out on the 303 to connect to an adcom 555 amplifier. I was going through a volume control then into the 555. This sends signal out to an Adcom 8 button speaker selector that feeds Niles volume controls for 8 sets of in wall speakers . I purchased the N1000 to replace the N303 because I could not control the volume remotely. I connected the 555 to the Pre out on the 1000 now I am getting low volume coming out of the speakers that are connected to the GFA 555.

I also have speakers connected to A+B for bi amp and a subwoofer via rca.

If I had the Yamaha N1000 (100WPC), I would just connect it directly to the speakers.

It makes exactly zero sense to output to another 100WPC amp.

I’m trying to use the speaker connection for the local and the amp for the home in wall speakers.

You must have used just line outs on the N-303 as it doesn't have preouts....a constant signal.
Your preouts on the N-1000A will be whatever the volume is set to on the N-1000A.

This is not ideal when using your volume control (whatever it is).
You should be feeding the volume control a full level signal....the only way to control volume remotely from homebase is to use an amp with zone control.

I previously used the volume control with the n303. I attached the specs and manual for the GFA 555 (1985). Perhaps this will help.

First, using both A+B terminals from either receiver to a pair of speakers isn't bi-amping. Each receiver just has a two channels amp. More a waste of wire....

You should with the RN1000A be able to at least run the same voltage to the Adcom as you did with the line-outs from the 303 (but will need to use the volume control on the RN1000 to adjust for that, may take a fairly high volume level). May not work for your purposes, particularly if you want everything playing simultaneously.

As to running 8 pairs of speakers thru the Adcom/Niles setup from another 2ch amp....meh.

Isolar made a good observation. The preouts on the new Yamaha are downstrem from the volume control, at least I'm pretty sure they are, so unless you have the volume knob on it cranked you are sending a much lower voltage signal to the Adcom than you were previously (sending a full hot line out from the N303 and relying on those Niles thingamadoodles to trim the volume back on the amplified, distributed signal, way downstream...we really need to talk about that whole part of the rig. It sounds like an install from the 1990's.)

Max out those Niles volume controls, full wide open, as you're now controlling the volume from the Yamaha.

The last two posts pretty much sum this up...you bought the wrong Yamaha for what you are doing.
The RN1000 is a very fine machine.
Unless you want to control another amp in another zone.

Note...you could always hook it up now to a line out again.
You would at least get your volume back without cranking the RN1000 all the way up.
I can almost bet you got confused by how Yamaha promoted the Music Cast App when choosing the RN1000

Thanks for the input. I have also have an RX-A8A in my home theater and I ran RCA cables to my Adcom in my living room using Zone 2. Problem solved!

Thanks for the input. I have also have an RX-A8A in my home theater and I ran RCA cables to my Adcom in my living room using Zone 2. Problem solved! I added the zone in my Musicast App.

No need for specs and such on the old Adcom...it's just a 2 channel power amp. A very nice old amp, but not the root of your issue. (although that old manual is a hoot!)
Good to see you got the second zone going with a different setup/avr.

And, you certainly have a much much better 2 channel Yamaha now !
(just dont use the bi-amp, you are actually wasting the output of the new unit that way)
