My buddy is letting more borrow his yamaha htr5590 for a couple months since he can't use it yet and we hooked it up and i noticed that it has a fixed crossover at 90hz. I have paradigm monitor 7's, cc370 and titans as rears with an Hsu vtf2-mk2 sub. I was wondering if there is anyway to bypass this crossover? can i use the crossover on my sub?
If i can't bypass it, then should i set my fronts to small or large?
Thanks Derek

Does the sub have speaker level inputs? If so, you can run speaker wire from the front l/r speaker terminals on the receiver to the sub and from the sub to the speakers. You would then use the crossover on the sub.

You would then have to set the bass management to front = Large and Subwoofer = no.

90Hz may not be ideal, but why not just try it first? Running multiple sets of speaker wires to the sub and from the sub to the front speakers creates a real mess of wire.

thanks for the reply, i do have it setup now with the 90hz crossover and it doesn't sound bad, just not sure if i should have fronts to large or not? and also, should i send the lfe to the mains and sub, or just sub?

In general, it's best to set all speakers to Small and let the sub do all of the bass. Paradigm claims the Monitor 7's go down to 33 Hz (-3db) but even so a decent sub should be able to play cleanly down to that level or lower. LFE can be as low as 20 Hz and the 7's can't handle that as well as a good sub. You can try Large to see if you like it, but Small is better and will allow the 'digms to play louder and cleaner because they won't have to reproduce the low frequencies and the receiver won't have to amplify those low frequencies.

The reason you have to set the fronts to Large if you use the speaker level hookup for the sub is that the fronts are now connected to the sub and the sub needs to get the full-range signal so it can send the high frequencies above the crossover point to the fronts. The Large setting sends the full range signal.

If you would like to bypass the Yamaha's built in crossover, attach your main wires to your sub and then cross them over to your main, set your main speakers to LARGE in Yamaha and LFE to none.

Thanks guys, I think i will just set them all to small and let my sub (Hsu vtf2-mk2) take all the low end.
