Which do you think is the better unit

Denon A/V Receiver (AVR-687)

or

Yamaha HTR6060

The Yamaha is definitely the better receiver. I have the Denon AVR-686 and it's OK. But the Yamaha has more power, HDMI switching, 8ch preout and more digital inputs than the AVR-687.

Great minds think alike i guess, the yamaha is on it's way. I am sure it will put my old sony strde697 to shame :)

I just found your other post in the Newbie section. I'm not a technical genius, but I would guess the Sony is the problem you described, maybe an issue with the power supply? Enjoy the Yamaha.

I sold my RX-V2500 for a Denon AVR-887. No complaints.

This info is a little late, since it seems you already ordered the Yamaha, but I was told by Yamaha that that receiver will not output 7.1 via HDMI, if that means anything to you. That's about the only drawback it has though.

I don't think there are alot of titles currently in 7.1 if I remember correctly.

As far as I know, there are none; some DVD’s are in 6.1, and Blu-ray and HD DVD support 7.1, but I don’t know of any movies that have been released with 7.1 - yet.

well considering my speaker setup is currently only 5.1 i don't think it will be an issue. Also since i don't really own any hdmi equipment (xcept my dvd player) i think i will be fine.

So far, the only 7.1 content I know if is Resistance; Fall of Man. But there are quite a few 6.1 DVD's out there. I just want to be able to have the option, if I decide to buy the extra speakers, and if they start putting out some more content.

The AVR-887/2307 is a much closer match to the HTR-6060 than the AVR-687. That would be a tough call. If I were shopping now, there's a very good chance I'd get the Yamaha, but I am happy with the AVR-2307CI.

wel if thats the case then the yamaha is a better buy since the 887 is a full $300 more than the yamaha.

Denon 887 $999
Yamaha $699

the denon 787 (85w x 7)would be the closest match
to the yamaha 6060 (90w x 7)

The HTR-6060 has HDMI switching while the Denon AVR-787 does not, which does not indicate a close match in my eyes. HDMI is a significant feature. And as near as I can tell, the HTR-6060 is 105w x7 but watts are not the best feature by which to judge or compare receivers.

Between the two, Yamaha is definitely mu choice since its more powerful.
No offense, but that is phewy.

Believe me, there is no way you can no if a receiver has more power than another by looking at very limited specs. Not only that, but 5 watts is neglegible.

Pick the one with the features you like, find easy to use, and will look good with your decor, not which one has more specified power ratings.

Am I in the lifestyle section?

How about the one that sounds better with your speakers?

Everyone is so concerned with power ratings?

Do all receivers sound the same?

Just wondering.

My advice

Go and listen....lift it up...hit the buttons...look at the warranty...check the features then read the reviews and customer feedback.

Multiply by 7 divide by 3 and bang...you have your receiver.

At the lower price points is yamaha not tough to beat?

For the most part receivers do sound the same. For one to say Yamaha forward and bright and Denon is more laid back and warm is pretty much a load of bull. I have said this so many times I should put it in my signature, any well designed/built transistor amplifier should sound transparent within its design limits. Which means, so long as the amplifier is not clipping audibly there should be no difference between Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo or other mass production receivers.

Everyone is so concerned with power ratings?
Not sure exactly what you are asking here, but there is reason to be concerned with power, just not to the point that some people make it out to be. The difference between 85 watts and 90 watts should be not even noticeable. Say you have a set of speakers that achieve 89 dB with 1 watt. In order to achieve 3 more dB you need to double the wattage. So for 92 dB you need 2 watts. 4 watts gets you 95 dB, 8 watts/98 dB, 16 watts/101 dB, 32 watts/104 dB, 64 watts/107 dB. So when you reach 85-90 you are going to get only about 1-1.5 more dB anyway, which is really hard to detect with human hearing.

At the lower price points is yamaha not tough to beat?
Yamaha and Onkyo are probably the most competitive in this price range. Sony would also be a competitor, but not to many folks here like their stuff because they have quality control issues and user interface issues.
