Yamaha NS-B310 Bookshelf Speaker Overview

Recently, my dad was looking for a pair of speakers for my brother's birthday. He's always working on his computer, so I figured that a nice pair of speakers would be a good idea. I'm a Yamaha fan, and that is why I thought of buying him a pair of NS-B310 Bookshelf Speakers. And since his desk isn't so big, I needed to find something compact and these babies are just the right size. We went to Best Buy and gave them a try and, to our surprise, they sounded pretty good for a speaker with such a small footprint. It incorporates dual 3.1", so don't expect huge bass from then, but they do offer good mid-bass and high-frequency tones. Power handling goes up to 120W and frequency response ranges from 80 Hz - 35 kHz. This speaker is well built, it has a removable grille. It was just what we needed. So there you have it. If you are looking for a compact set of bookshelf speakers, check out these little fellows. It won't play extra loud, but they behave really well at moderate levels and, what's more important, they will fit our purpose just fine. Do we have any owners here?

Wonder how they compare to the Yamaha NS-6490?

Wonder how they compare to the Yamaha NS-6490?
Well, the 6490 has better specs, not to mention a much larger cabinet and a larger (8-inch) woofer. I would say this is an unfair comparison for the B310.

Some specs of the 6490:
  • Drivers: 8" Cone Woofer, 4" Cone Mid-Range, 7/8" Balanced Dome Tweeter.
  • Frequency Response: 45 Hz - 23 kHz.
  • Nominal Impedance: 8 ohms.
  • Sensitivity: 90 dB/2.83 V/m kHz.
  • Dimension (W x H x D): 10-1/2" x 16-1/5" x 13-1/5"

I had a couple of versions of them - they are lacking, and leave
you wanting more.

On one set - I pulled all the drivers out and replaced them - and
put some damping material inside.

The box is thin, with no damping material and they only use high
pass filters for the midrange and the tweeter.

The stock Pioneer are better speakers.

However, you like to collect stuff - so go and buy a pair.:)

Well, here is a nice looking Yamaha bookshelf speaker that
has a horn waveguide - run them against your HSU bookshelf.
Price is each

I never did a review of the HSU's but I remember looking at them for sale back in December. Mine are the MkII's. I really do like them and think they are very well built. They sound great to my ears and wouldnt have an issue recomending them to somebody.
