Hello all!

When playing all channel stereo does the Yamaha HTR5890/RXV1500 (or any ones for that matter) send all the bass to all the speakers if they are set to large? My old system was a Harmon Kardon HK6500 (two channel) driving two CerwinVega AT-12's and two Cerwin Vega D-5's. So I like full range sound from four (or more) speakers. Yes before the comments start I want new (read better) speakers. So if any one has any comments on a 7.1 system for a hard rock nut like me feel free !!! (room size, 14' wide x 24' long x 8' tall = 2688 sqft.)

p.s. I've been looking at athena but have not made up my mind.

p.s.s. Budget around $2500.00 for Receiver, speakers, dvd/cd player & cables

Wow, quick response back from Yamaha

Were you looking for Floor standing of Bookshelf for mains. Also how often would this be used for just music listening vs. Home theater use?
I listen to rock all the time too and if you dont mind a speaker thats a little brighter, Klipsch (sometimes knows as the ultimate party speaker b/c they are so efficient they can play loud on minimal power) could be a good route for the speakers, Maybe RF-25's for the mains and an RC-25 for the center. The four surrounds may differ depeding on your listening habits, more music probably want all book shelfs, more movies may want one set of bi-pole/di-pole speakers and one set of book shelves. Also you may want to go ceck out Paraidigm Performance series for the budget you have, awesome bang for your buck speakers (personally my favorite). With a good sub you shouldn't need those huge drivers like in your cervin vegas. Check out HSU or SVS subs for around 400 dollars you can get something that'll pound out those drums. Alot of ppl have had good luck with the BIC 12" sub as well.

Receiver side if you listen to rock music like most of us itll be really loud and your going to want a hefty receiver. The Yamaha 1500 is a great choice for a receiver, or you might check out something like the Pioneer 1015 ( think the pioneer is going for something like 500 dollars right now. A Marantz 7400 would probably do the job as well.

Hard Rock = Cerwin Vega, Klipsch, Acoustech, Axiom, or anything with horns.

Hi Spiffyfast,

I think floor standers. For the price of bookshelves and good stands I'm almost at the price of floor standers and most floor standers I've heard sound better than bookshelves. Then again there is alot I have not heard.

What I've been able to go hear for myself so far has been Athena Klipsch, JBL, Polk & Infinity and I was most impressed with the Athenas. That being said I am impressed with the spl of Klipsch. My neighbor has $13000 in home theater (62" mitsubishi dlp, denon 3805 & very large klipsch 5.1 setup) and is very loud but it seemed flat. Lord knows how it's set up and its in a room about 12 x 16. I wonder if the room is to small. Don't you think klipsch is a little expensive. I like them but at that price point I don't love them.(Makes me wonder if I would love the athenas if they were more expensive.)

BTW: I watch more tv/movies but music is very important to me. I get the feeling reading these threads that music is an after thought for alot of them. I can't help but think that a 5.1/6.1/7.1 system set up for music first with the right sub would be a better all around system then one set up with movies in mind first.

Buckeyefan1,

I probably steared you the wrong way. I do listen to all types of music so I don't want any thing to colored. Ya know (and probably everyone else) the horns in my Cerwin vegas don't do Dave Brubeck or Nora Jones any justice. I was young but I have no regrets. I'm sure klipsch does a better job though. Maybe I shouldn't bring up the cerwins any more. I don't want a stigma applied to me!!!

Thanks for the reply,

Don't worry about the athenas not being expensive, doesnt matter, they are amazing speakers especially for the price, hard for anything to compete with them. If space isn't an issue the best thing you could do is set up AS-F1's or F-2's all around and get the matching center, I'm sure it would sound amazing with movies and music would be unvelievable in 6 or 7 channel stereo. If you have the room by all means thats what you should do, but that many floor standers is gonna suck some juice so be sure to get a good receiver.

Blatant Axiom pitch alert

Dont forget to look at Axiom Audio. I got them and let me tell you, THESE SPEAKERS SHAKE WALLS !!.

Incidently, I have the very receiver you are looking to get. works very well with the Axioms.

Not a problem. No stigma attached. And I thought you were a young frat jock who liked his metal! Bust my bubble. For the more demanding music, I prefer the flagship Athena towers, and the BIC DV84's for their modest pricing and very good sound.
