I'm pretty new to all this stuff so please bear with me  This stuff is confusing as hell

Let me see if I can make myself understood.

I just bought a new LCD HDTV, a new Yamaha Reciever, and Yamaha Upconverting DVD player.

All have HDMI PORTS and COMPONET CABLE PORTS
The back of the HDTV has an OPTICAL AUDIO OUT. The Reciever has 2 OPTICAL AUDI INPUTS.

My question:

How do I watch normal TV with the sound going through my AVR? Or do I need to listen to Normal TV programs through the TV speakers?

Should I run my DVD player to my TV via HDMI then run an optical audio to the reciever or do I need to run everything through my reciever via HDMI INPUT then HDMI OUTPUT to the TV? Then run the OPTICAL AUDIO back to the Reciever?
Also, could I use a Digital Audio Coxial form my DVD to AVR along with the HDMI cable?

And, can I use a video cable out to the TV to get my OSD?

Or should I just run everything via Component Cables?

I also run an RF Digital Cable directly to my TV, I have no Cable Box

Welcome to the forum!

To answer your questions:

You can hook up the optical digital audio output from the TV to the receiver and listen to the TV sound through the receiver. You can listen to the audio from normal TV programs through the TV speakers, but you certainly don't need to do that.

I would connect the DVD player to the receiver using an HDMI cable, and then connect the HDMI output from the receiver to the HDMI input on the TV. HDMI carries both audio and video, so there is no need to connect the optical audio output from the TV or the coaxial audio output from the DVD player to the receiver in order to get sound from DVDs.

And, can I use a video cable out to the TV to get my OSD?
Yes. The OSD does not work over HDMI, so you would need to run either a component video cable or a composite video cable from the receiver to the TV.

Thanks, this has been driving me crazy:D

Also, running another video cable for OSD won't mess up my HDMI video signal?

Jeez, I know I'm a pain, but one more question, Is it better to use HDMI or Component Connections?

No problem!

Running the extra video connection shouldn't have any effect on your HDMI connection to the TV.

Regarding HDMI versus component video, HDMI should be able to have the same or better video quality as compared to component video. Also, HDMI is more convenient - HDMI carries digital audio and digital video in just one cable, versus the four cables that you would use for component video and a digital audio connection.

That said, if you have the cables already, then I would suggest that you try both connections and decide for yourself if there is any difference between them. I just happen to like checking things out for myself. :)

Also, if you don't have HDMI cables, you can save a lot of money and get the same quality of cable by choosing a brand other than the popular Monster brand cables. Monoprice.com and Blue Jeans Cable offer good cables.

Malazan,
I too just bought the Yamaha YHT-6140 receiver. For some reason I can't get the HDMI from my Pioneer DV-410v upconvert DVD player to play video. I think the receiver is not able to deal with the signal for some reason. When I switch to DVD the picture and sound initially come through but then pulse in and out and then finally I am left with nothing but fuzz on the screen. I've also tried one of the Toshiba XD-E500 DVD players but that didn't work either.

Mabye its my settings or something... I don't know.

What DVD player do you have?

Thanks,
Fred

Simple question (I hope) also concerning the HTR-6140.

Can I run component video in and have it output through the HDMI?

Would save me a bit of cash monthly on a different cable box or another long cable to my projector. =)

Read if confused:
(If thats confusing, I want to run my cable box's video signal through a standard component video cable, and have the output signal go through my HDMI thats already hooked to my projector.

Haven't found anything saying it's NOT possible, so it's up to you good folks to either make my dreams come true or crush my hopes.)

dnorm, it does not transcode (up-convert) to HDMI. See pg 14.
