If you had to choose which receiver, which would you go with? I am looking to buy one or the other. Both seem to be pretty good and both are THX receivers. They are within $30 of each other, the onkyo costing $30 more than the yamaha.

Thanks for any help I can get.

These are both pretty solid receivers for the money and pretty equal. If your preference was more towards movies than music, most of the Yamaha receivers above entry level seem to be a bit better for soundtrack reproduction than other manufacturers equivalent offerings. This isn't to say it's not good w/ music, just accentuating that it excels w/movies.

Either of these would likely give you a solid performer for some time... -TD

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I listen to a lot of music, but I also love movies. I am going to give the Yamaha a try.

I've had the 5890 for a year now and it will handle everything you want to throw at it except hdmi. If I were in the market right now there is no way you could get me to throw $$ at a receiver that didn't have hdmi capabilities. Just my .02

Yamaha receivers

I think you will find that the Yamaha RX-V1600 and HTR-5990 include the HDMI switching feature. Both models have recently been replaced (by the RX-V1700 and HTR-6090) so you might be able to find some good deals. I have also seen great deals posted for the RX-V2500 model for around $500. Plenty of power and features, but no HDMI.

These are very close. I would get the Yamaha, but mostly because I've had so much luck with mine.
You really can't go wrong with either.

HDMI, while a nice feature, is still in its early stages and prior to the 1.3 release seems to be hit-or-miss from most folk's feedback on it that I've seen to this point.

There's quite a few solid receivers that can be had for a great price if HDMI isn't a necessity... -TD
