I recently purchased the 5890 and I am attemtping to connect my DVD and Xbox to the component video inputs. I have connected all properly and also connected the component output to my Samsung DLP TV. The picture I am getting sucks. Reds really stick out, but everything else is more of a gray color. Any thoughts/suggestions??

Afro2cool,

I've got a 5990 and I had to make a couple of changes in my setup after running everything through the receiver.

I began using the receiver's upconversion to convert my DVD output to progressive scan, so I'm now taking the interlaced output from my player.

I also has to recalibrate the TV (just normal brightness, contrast, color, tint and sharpness). I recommend going back to flat settings on your DVD, if you aren't already setup that way.

I noticed the output coming from the receiver, as compared to taking output directly from the DVD, is MUCH brighter. That is very likely the root cause of the problem you're seeing.

Now, I'm very satisfied with the image. I was also glad to see that the Yamaha did NOT interfere with my DVD's ability to pass blacker than black.

You sure you connected everything properly? I have the same amp and running my ps2, cable box and dvd player throught the receiver. I initially got a greyed out picture with yellow/green standing out. The problem was that I connected the red video cable to the red audio input, lol! Once I corrected it, the picture was awesome!

As long as you know for sure all your connections are right and the receiver is setup correctly, throw in a THX certified DVD and use the video optimizer. I found this to work pretty well considering it's free, and you'd be surprised how off the factory settings can be from how the picture is supposed to look.

That is strange considering the receiver only does video switching. Maybe you are comparing the calibrated input to the uncalibrated one.

I have the 5890. My DVD player goes straight to the TV and xBox is routed through the amp. After calibrating the TV for the DVD using DVE, the xBox routed through the amp looked really bright. So then I connected it to the calibrated DVD input and vola, not bright any more.

Hi agarwalro,

Actually the 5990 will convert an interlaced signal to progressive scan. I believe the receiver's deinterlacer is the source of the difference. I simply recalibrated the display using DVE in my DVD player (all sources are fed through the receiver to the monitor). This solved the issue and the picture from all sources looks terrific.

Crap. How could I forget about the upconversion. The side effect of posting from work. Thanks for straightening that out.
