Yamaha HTR-5790 warranty ?

I purchased an extended warranty through Yamaha’s website and then later learned that it is only good if you purchased the receiver through an authorized dealer. I purchased my receiver online from B&H. B&H did not show up on the dealer locator. Did I waste my money on the extended warranty?

Also I was wandering if I could hook up a graphic equalizer to my receiver.

If you purchased the warranty direct from Yamaha, you need to have them verify whether or not the place your purchased the receiver from is authorized or not and whether the warranty would be honored. If they determine that it is unauthorized, there should be no problem with getting a refund for the warranty.

They can't just keep your money if the warranty is not valid - it would be fraudulent; like an insurance company selling you insurance on a property you don't own.

You might verify the *extended* warranty isn't valid. But, most warranties give you 60 days to change your mind to get a full refund, and it's pro-rated from there. So, you shouldn't have a problem as long as you work it out soon.

If it's really not valid, you do have other choices in the market to get a warranty.

Seems how I didn't purchase my receiver through an authorized dealer does that mean I don't have the factory warranty either?

Yes, no, maybe.

Just because the vendor that actually sold the unit to you is not an authorized dealer does not automatically void out the warranty (if the manufacturer says only sales through authorized dealers will be honored).

What is the loophole? It is complex. One of the issues is "title", as in ownership title.

Simply, if the seller, who is not an authorized vendor for the product, has never taken legal possession of the product, rather is handling the product as if it is on consignment from the legit authorized vendor, it is possible that a full manufacturer warranty package still applies.

In other words, the seller is just a broker handling a sale for the actual legit dealer, and the unit is actually registered with the manufacturer as being sold by the legit dealer.

Be careful with a graphic eq. Your receiver has a built in parametric eq that should suffice. If you run a separate old school eq, only hook it up between your 2 channel cd player and the cd input on the receiver. Don't try running the eq through the DVD player - it won't work. I had a 10 band Audio Source EQ running between my previous Sony 5.1 receiver and CD player and it was fine. Really tweaked the sound of my cd's so much it made the rest of my system sound like crap. Graphic eq's are a great way to fry tweeters!
