Yamaha HTR-5740 Component video problem with DVD inputs.

Hello,

-- question is at the end

I recently had my cable box upgraded to a DVR which has component video outputs, HDMI output, S-Video output, digital coaxial audio, optical digital audio and of course, typical RCA L/R audio and video.

I'm still using an old school rear projection non-hidef screen with the intention of upgrading later next year. However, in doing some reading I found that component video gives a better picture even on a non-hidef screen. So, I bought necessary cables for my DVR, DVD and monitor out for my receiver. I wired the DVR/Cable box in the proper input of my receiver and the DVD in the proper input in my receiver. DVR/Cable box works fine (and the picture is noticeably better vs using the composite video) but the DVD does not work at all. Sound still works (using digital fiber), but video outputs nothing.

I went around the receiver and wired the DVD directly to the TV using component video and it works fine, nice and clear comparitively even to the S-Video I was using. Then I wired the DVD into the inputs of my receiver in place of my cablebox inputs, also worked fine. So, it seems the problem lies directly in the DVD inputs of the receiver.

My TV has only two available inputs and I still use VCR's (I know... I know... get out of the stone ages), so I'm forced to use the composite video inputs into my receiver and run the composite video out of my receiver to one of my TV's inputs.

That leaves one remaining input on my TV. Either I can wire my DVD directly to the TV using component or S-Video (as I have now) and be stuck with routing the cable through the receiver using standard composite video, or switch it manually by rolling the tv out... or flip flop the DVD/cable box to the TV.

What stinks is that I know now the clarity difference and it's going to be hard to ignore it.

Question is, anyone know what my issue might be with my receiver not allowing me to use the component video inputs for the DVD? As noted in the lengthy discussion above, the component video inputs for the cablebox work fine. Is it a setting I'm not finding in the manual? Or is my receiver just broken?

The receiver is a Yamaha HTR-5740.

I'm trying to use input A in the component video section. Input B appears to work fine.

Welcome to the forum!

My first thought is the assignment of those inputs. Let's make sure that the receiver knows that you want to use those component video inputs (input A) with the source selection that you are using for the DVD player (I'm assuming "DVD").

The default assignment for input A is the "DVD" selection, but perhaps either you are using a different selection to watch DVD or those inputs got reassigned at some point.

Check out page 48 of the owner's manual for the HTR-5740. It discusses how to go about assigning inputs (both audio and video).

A quick check before going through that would be to do the following: with the DVD player connected to those component video inputs, the DVD player on and playing, and the TV set to the correct input - cycle between the "DVD," "V-AUX," "DTV/CBL," and "VCR" source selections to see if any image shows up on the TV. I say that because only those four inputs can be assigned to the component video inputs.

Thanks! That was it!

I have no idea how I missed that in the book... I guess I was so focused on the component video that I didn't think about the mapping of the audio. I vaguely remember messing what that when I was installing it 2 years ago to get the DVD player (again) to work with the optical digital audio input.

Thanks again!
