Yamaha HTR-5280 Cuts off

Howdy:

My Yamaha HTR-5280 is a few years old, and lately it cuts off in the middle of movies and songs when the volume is up to a certain (middle-ish) level.

I also seem to have issues with certain of the "Effects" (concert hall, etc.) where you can hear everything except the voices, which are extremely muted or not audible at all.

I'm hoping this is some sort of setup issue - sounds like a short of some kind.

Here's what the setup is:

- Monitor Audio speakers are wired to the posts (no plugs) on both ends

- Denon DVD player w/ Coax digital and standard plugs (red/white) to the receiver. The power plug for the DVD goes to the receiver.

- iPod direct input w/ standard plugs

- TV/Dish direct input w/ standard plugs

Any of these input methods can cause the power outage, though the TV seems to require pushing the volume up higher.

Also, the audio doesn't sound loud enough. Cutout is around 40dB, which should be pretty loud, but isn't.

No video is running through the receiver.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi, Lee, and welcome to the forum!

I'll take a look at your manual and see if anything stands out to me. Did you make any changes to your system just prior to experiencing this issue? For example, moving things around (that might have jiggled some cables) or doing something that puts more restrictions on the air flow around the receiver?

Just as a note - there's no need to double post your question. :) Most of us will see it regardless of which section you put it in.

Have you gone through the "Troubleshooting" section in the owner's manual for the HTR-5280? If you haven't, it starts on page 66. That's the first place that I looked, and there are a few different items that might apply here.

Also, what setting are you using on the impedance selector switch on the back of the receiver?
