I've been living with the first incarnation of this player for over a year now and I enjoy it tremendously. It has excellent audio and video performance. The Farouda de-interlacing is a big plus.

You do have to set up SACD and DVD-A seperately, but it isn't that big of a deal.

I didn't compare it to the Denon's since they haven't come out yet when I purchased the unit. The dealer I use has a 7 day return with no questions asked policy, so I took it home, put on DSOTM and was totally sold.

Yamaha DVD-2300 MkII

jconde,

I too had seriously considered this unit as an alternative to the Denon 2900 several months ago. During my investigations, it turned out that the unit was having definite problems trying to play certain multi-layer SACDs. Yamaha finally admitted that they were planning a chipset replacement, and at that point, my dealer discontinued selling them (didn't want to hassle with returns). I have a friend that is still waiting for his chipset replacement, and it's been over 2 months since Yamaha formally announced the replacement fix. I then tried to get a Denon 2900, but those units were backordered. I ended up with a Marantz DV-8400 and absolutely love it. A bit more than the Yammie or Denon, but a superb unit, which seems to do everything well.

Good Luck,

Pat :)

Do you know if the MK2 version of the unit has the replacement chipset?

Additionally, is the Marantz DV-8400 both a DVD-A and SACD player?

Thanks.

Yes, the Marantz plays both SACD and DVD-A.

I was talking to a Yamaha rep at the home entertainment show in NYC last weekend. It appears that the 2300's days are numbered. It will be replaced around October. He did not have any further info on the replacement. The new, cheaper 1500 looked interesting. It will almost have the performance of the 2300 for about $400. It is also very thin. It will not be RS232 controlable though.
