So I was in a local stereo shop today and they are selling a new model, a Yamaha DVD 657. It apparantly is replacing the DVD 1500 at a fraction of the cost. $250 Canadian. It plays SACD and DVD A, is a single player, unlike the 750. Is it missing something? Besides the Farouja (sp?) chip, is anything else missing from the 1500 or 750? I don't think it has bass management, where is it set at? Is there an AH review or links?

Is this player any better than what I have now, the Panasonic F 85? Is it worth checking out? i will have SACD for cheap until I want to fork out cash later for a Denon.

Thanks guys.

And tonight I read about NeuNeo 2805. And something else called an Oppo. The NeuNeo sounds very good for the money. Almost as good as the Denons.

JC, I think both those units are fine, especially for the price. I haven't bought into DVD-A or SACD mainly due to the limited offereings of titles, as well as personal preference. I have purchased some DTS Audio cd's, and was somewhat impressed. I still prefer 2 channel (plus a sub) for music.

Hello
I just installed one over the week end for the money it has stellar perfromance. Its progressive output is good and its Analog outputs are very good User interface has improved over the DVD-C750

I don't see the DVD 657 on their web site.

People...this could be the best buy out there. I don't know if it has bass management though.

Any one else know anything? I am so surprised the AH forums know nothing of this unit yet. It's supposed to replace the 1500 and it's only $250!!!

Hello Johnny,
I'm new in this forum and am looking for some info (not only specs, which I have already, but real life user experience) about the DVD-S657 from Yamaha.
My main interest is focused on its DVD-Audio/SACD performance and CD Upsampling capabilitites.
How do you like it so far??

Thanks in advance for your input.

I think all debates about what DVD player to get under $300 stop here. Maybe even $500. This Yamaha DVD S657 has to be the best bargain and bang for your buck. I paid $229 Canadian. Fantastic picture. Plays SACD and DVD A. I played my reference disc, Eagles Hell Freezes Over DTS DVD...went back and forth to my Panasonic F85 I have had for 3 years (which smoked the Pioneer 567a side by side) and the sound was amazingly better. Even my tone deaf girlfriend heard the difference. Amazing seperation and the music just opeened right up. And I finally got to hear DSOTM in SACD. Wow! "On the Run" was amazing.

Anyways...can't see anybody really wanting more for that kind of money. Does it all!

In which store did you find it, JC? I'm in Toronto, and I checked the "big 4" (Bay Bloor Radio, 2001 Audio/Video, Future Shop and Best Buy), and none of them carry the 657. The smaller mom and pop shops usually have only discontinued stuff, so I haven't bothered checking them.

cheers,

Ray, what was the model number of the unit you installed? I googled the model number JC gave us and can't find anything.

Thanks

I bought mine at A & B Sound. It's a western Canada chain..it sells for $289 but I know the guy pretty well and like I said before, got it for $229.

I couldn't find it on either the Canada or USA Yamaha site but i think it was released in Europe in April 05 from what I recall on my searches.

Apparantly it's a Made In China (what isn't these days) Yamaha DVD 1500 without the Foaroudja (sp?) chip.
