Yamaha DSP A1 as power amplifier help

I have just purchased a new pre processor. I want my old yamaha A1 to power my new processor. Where should the volumn be on the yamaha. I want to control the listening volumn through the processor.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

This is going to be a simple back and forth process for you (unless you have an oscilloscope handy). What you want is accurate gain staging, so that neither unit is distorting on input or output when played at the loudest levels you intend to use. I would set the pre-pro at 50% and bring up the DSP-A1 to as high as 50%. If you can go that high and its not the loudest you'll use, then bring up the pre-pro a bit more until it is to 60-70% - then notch up the Yamaha...

You simply don't want either one maxxed out and you want a good balance of input to output. In other words, you don't want to amplify noise, so you want a good solid input signal to the DSP-A1, however you don't want to overdrive the pre-pro so as to feed distortion to the amp either.

In NO case do you want to hear distortion - if you hear that - back off on both and start again.

I think what you want to do is to send your preamp-processor output directly the the A1 amp section, not through its preamp input in thwich case Hawks would be correct.
Hopefully the A1 has a shorting bar between the pre amp out and amp section in, a bare round, thick wire. Each channel that has this feature you can use. This way, you don't have to worry about anything and th evolume control on the A! will be bypassed as only the amp is used, no volume control there.
I would not recommend sending the processor out to the pre input on the A1.

Thanks

I rang Yamaha today. Instead of using the external decoder imput. He told me to use the main Coupliers. Just remove the bars and use the imputs.
This by passes everthing except the amplifiers. Noticed a big difference already.

Thanks again folks.

Where are these bars, on the back? Maybe a picture if you have a link? We are curious, I am :)

If you look at the back of the DSP-A1, you will see a shoting bar connecting "PRE-OUT" and "MAIN-IN". Just remove that and use the main-in only. It goes straight to the power amp and can be controlled by your new processor.

That is what I know of an used mostly and was suggesting in my post. The language above was a bit different. Now we are on the same page :)
