Yamaha differences 5790 vs 5890 vs 2500

Stopped in the local Best Buy yesterday and picked up a dvd. Went over to see their receivers (wanted to see the new Pioneer 9100, 9300 and 1015 models - they had none!) and noticed a Yamaha open box 5790 marked down to $349. Isnt this last years version of the 5890, which compares to the 2500? It weighed a ton, had some impressive specs, and the rear panel resembled my Denon 3805. Seemed like a steal. It was missing the power cord (big deal). I would think anyone in the market looking for a sub $400 unit would be hard pressed to find something this good for that price. I checked yahoo shopping, and that unit starts around $500 + shipping. The 2500 unit starts around $630. Is there that much difference in the 2500, the 5790 and 5890 other than a few watts and inputs?

I also demo'd the new Athena WS100's, the older AS-F1's, and the Klipsch Synergy III F-3. I'll post in the speaker section my thoughts.

My Understanding was that the 5890 has the same guts as the 1500. So, 5790 probably equavalent to the 1400. I want to get a 2500, but at that price I think I'll go to my Best Buy with my 30% off open box coupon (link posted elsewhere on this site) to make it $245. That would be very hard to pass up. My luck they wont have any. Thanks for the tip.

Very similar

It looks like they all have DTS Neo 6 and PLIIx. The older 1400 and 2400 does not have PLIIx. The 1500, 2500, 5790 and 5890 all weigh in at 33-34lbs (pretty beefy), and their wattage only varies by 20 watts. It does appear the 2500 stands out with a little more wattage and features.

Per the Yamaha site:
Yamaha has created a new look by using gold colored lettering in selected areas on the HTR receiver series.
The amplifiers in the HTR and RX-V units are identical.
The RX-V line is typically sold through Yamaha authorized audio/video specialty retailers.
The HTR line is sold through mass merchants.

This makes that 5790 look like an extremely good buy at $349.

Just got 5790 at Best Buy for $300 w/ 30% coupon.

I liked the receiver for the money. I think one of the best feature is the ability to bi-wire front channels right from the receiver w/o external amp and still have 7 channels.
Processing on the unit is very nice as well.

Oh, I mean to ask, do I really need RS232 input? Is it something that can be taken care of from a universal remote such as Phillips ProntoPro NG(remotecentral.com)?
Pronto is awesome! You can select movies right on the remote via DVD cover.(sure beats VideoRequest for $2000)

Hey everyone. I also have a question, on a related note. I'm trying to decide between the HTR5890 and the RXV2500. Looking at the ABT site (http://www.abtelectronics.com/product/18194.html) they both have a RS-232c port, both decode the same formats, and the 5890 actually has 140x7, as opposed to the 2500's 130x7. On top of everything else, I work at Best Buy part-time for the discount, so I'd be saving even more going with the 5890. Surely I'm overlooking something here, so does anyone have a little advice on the 2500?

As far as the power rating of the two recievers goes; The 5890 actually weighs in at 7 x 120 when you compare apples to apples. Yamaha for what ever reason rates the HTR models differently than the RXV's.
Without a doubt the 2500 is a better unit. To put it in perspective how much of a savings will you see by going with the 5890?

The 5890 and 1500 are closer in comparison. The 2500 is a step up from both.

Ah, I see. I was pretty skeptical about those specs myself. I haven't priced the discount for this model, but with most receivers I have priced the discount is a couple hundred dollars (give or take depending on the model). No matter, if the 2500 is that much better I'd just as soon buy the best receiver available in that price range. Does anyone here actually own the 2500? Better yet, do they have one hooked up to Definitive Tech speakers? That's the route I think I'll be going. Thanks for the replys.

Also, now that I think about it, I was thinking of buying the Supercube Reference, but I wasn't sure if it was too much for the speaker package I had in mind (CLR2300 Center, BP10 Floorstanding Fronts, and 4 SM350s as the sides and rears - all Definitive Technology.) They're all pretty much full range, however I've been hearing that the Reference carries an insane amount of power, and I wouldn't want to ruin the overall quality of sound for unnecessary power (Although I really want that Reference...). Any advice on the quality of that setup would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
