They should all sound about the same, just get the one that has the features you need in your price range.

I like HK a lot too. I've owned the HK247 for a few months, I really like the sound a lot. But the problem w/ HK347 ($800) right now is that it only has 2 HDMI 1.2 inputs and it doesn't have TrueHD & DTS-HD MA.

For $879, the Onkyo SR805 is a better deal, IMO: 3 HDMI 1.3 inputs + TrueHD + DTS-HD MA. The HK does have upscaling to 1080i (I think), but almost all HD players have great upscaling ability.

You can get the Onkyo TX-SR805 at accessoriesforless.com for 699.99 plus shipping.:D

Edit: It looks like they have a service plan for 3 years for $40, not bad IMO.

My budget is $900. what do you mean by TrueHD + DTS-HD MA. Are you saying it cannot handle HD inputs and that it does not have DTS decoding?

The H/K unit mentioned can handle high resolution Multichannel PCM up to 5.1. The Onkyo can handle high resolution multichannel PCM up to 7.1 and HDMI 1.3 complient devices can send a bitstream of Dolby Digital True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS-HD MA. The Onkyo has more features, more power, is easier to setup, and has the better bang for buck. I also think that Onkyo has less reliability issues than H/K.

Consider this, the Onkyo TX-SR805 has a suggested retail of $1100, and it came out this year. You won't find a better deal than $700 for any receiver, period. Spending $900 on a receiver won't likely land you any better of a receiver than that Onkyo.

You can't buy online? You won't find the Onkyo TX-SR805 for that cheap in a store.:)

Receiver options

I would recommend a receiver in the $4-500 price range for your Athenas. Something like the Onkyo 605 or Yamaha RX-V661 will have plenty of power for your 8 ohm speakers. Use the savings for an HD source like BluRay or HD-DVD, a sub upgrade, or room treatments.

If you are determined to spend more, check out the emotiva separates on sale for $800 shipped. No HDMI but plenty of power from the >60 pound amp.

That is a great price, I'm guessing that they aren't an authorized dealer?

I've bought my Main Speakers the Canton L800DCs as well as my rear surrounds, MS508's from Accessories4Less. They have some rock bottom prices. And occassionally will have make an offer sales on ebay auctions. That is how I got my fronts......after swapping some emails, I gave them a call and they gave me a phenomenal price. Good communications and excellent pricing......My Canton's are warrantied.......

Another note. According to HK, they do not make a reciever compatible with 6.1 or 7.1 PCM. For me this is why I am currently leaning towards a new yamaha.

Yeah, I would definitely buy the Onkyo 805 online for $699!!!
You cannot beat that.
Audioholics Professional Review just gave the Onkyo 805 a 5/5 star ratings on 2-channel & Multi-Channel Audio Performance. Can't get any better than that for even $1,000. But at $699 on-line, it's a steal.

Onkyo SR805 ALL THE WAY!

I too say that is an unbeatble price, too bad it's a refurb, but who cares as long as it still carries a full mfg. warranty.

What? Refurbished? I forgot to learn how to read in junor high.:D
I don't like the word "Refurbished".
Refurbished for $700 or Brand new for $880 ($180 more)? Hmm??
Yeah, I guess the extended warranty is good.

But is the warranty from Onkyo, which means you can take to any Onkyo Dealer (Circuit City, etc.) or is it a store warranty, which means you have to pay $$ for shipping both ways?

it's a mfg. warranty, but I think you have the option of purchasing an extened warranty from a 3rd party. But refurb isn't all bad, that means that whatever was wrong with it was fixed, and the unit was fully tested, so I see no reason to not get one, especially if it carries a full one year warranty. Chances are if it is going to fail, it will do so within that first year.
