Hey guys,

I've recently bought a Yamaha CR420 receiver and it's making a very weird noise from time to time. I've opened it and peeked inside but everything looks fine to my untrained eye.

It looks and sounds like this:

Can you help?

It sounds as if the relay turn on circuit is oscillating. The unit is pretty simple. There are delayed speaker turn on relays between the output transistors and the A/B speaker switches. This is to prevent turn on thumps damaging the speakers.

If you have no experience in repair you will need the help of a service technician. If I were servicing it I would turn my attention to caps C425 though C428. You could either replace them or remove and test them. Without test equipment and being there though you have to understand this is an educated (may be) at best.
