Yamaha components - loud noises

I have a 21 year old Yamaha C- 50 and M- 50 pre-amp and amp. In a very haphazard fashion, I've been getting EXTREMELY LOUD sounds that are not controlled by volume. I have to turn the units off to get the sound to stop.

I have had all weak solder points re-soldered. It's still doing it. Before I ditch this very good system, I'm looking for anyone that might know the cause.

It`s possible the electrolytics in the pwr. supply & elsewhere are failing due to age. Try to bypass the pre amp if you have a source w/ a volume control to isolate the problem. If the pre amp has a headphone jack, try that also. A good tech should be able to diagnose the problem on his test bench. Then you can decide whether the repair is worth the $, or whether it`s time to move on gear wise.

Sounds like the amp is going bad, possibly the capacitors. I agree with prziob, but I'd try swapping out the amp - then you will at least know whether it is the amp or preamp.
