Yamaha / Comcast / Sharp **HDMI Issues!!**

Does anyone have an opinion on the following MULTIPLE issues in trying to get HDMI to work with:

Yamaha RX-V2600
Sharp LC37D4U
Comcast Motorola DVR DCT3412 I

All three components have HDMI. All three DO NOT work.

When I hook up the Motorola DVR to the Sharp TV via HDMI, the HD channels come in funky, distorted, and the picture is split in half (one half moving to the right!). Comcast has been over five times, and each time the D8$%#! couldn't even identify the issue.

When I try to run the Motorola DVR through the Yamaha RX-V2600, and then to the Sharp TV, I get video for 1 second, then the screen turns green. The audio remains.

All of these are new components - what's going on???

I read this somewhere. Try connecting the motorolla to the 2600 via component cables, then connect the 2600 to tv via hdmi or dvi cables. Be sure the upconversion is on. Yeah I know the 2600 should just pass the hdmi signal thru hdmi cables right through, but who knows with technology nowadays. If that works then you just need to get some audio cables.

I have a MOTO6412 also for the split screen, instant replay or change channels takes care of it.

Ragged how bout if he hooks it up with s video, or composite it'll work like a champ.

My dad had the same problem. The Comcast installer told my dad that the cable boxes Comcast uses do not properly support the HDMI specification and that is why it does not work. Hopefully, Comcast will get their act together and update the firmware to properly support HDMI.

He is just running component video into the 2600 and letting the amp do the conversion to HDMI.

Have you tried adjusting the output resolution on your cable box? Go into the service menu (turn the cable box off and hit menu then ok) Start at 480i and keep bumping it up until the TV freaks out. See if that helps. It may be a resolution setting with the box. You may have to do this using a component or a composite video cable in order to see the menu.

Hi Ragged, and thanks for the response. What I don't like about doing this is that we're all paying a premium for having the latest components with HDMI switching, and then have to go back to component cables? Not fair...:( Actually, the only way the 2600 is willing to up-convert, is if you feed it content via component cables... I think the culprit is the cable box, and I think I should throw it on the ground and stomp on it...

Yes, but again, then I'm not using HDMI... ;) I really want to use HDMI!

By the way, if I understand you correctly, if I do instant replay, split screen, etc. (which I haven't figured out yet), it will correct the problem??

Thanks Howard - that may be what I'll have to end up doing... Although I don't want to - the difference in video quality between component (with the best monster cables) and HDMI is definitely visible, and HDMI is better.... :(

Hi JonBaker - definitely - setting it to 480p fixes the problem. But then, you're not getting a High Definition signal, and so what's the use of buying an HD TV? I might as well buy an Enhanced Def TV for half the price...

EC - this may be a dumb question, but is your DVR set to 720p or 1080i? My Explorer 8300HD DVR has options to set the unit to 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i.

Sorry I was not clear. For the display trouble where the picture is distorted, doubled, funky, filling partial screen. My 6412 moto box displays said screen when powered up nine times out of ten. To fix the problem I hit the instant replay or change the channel and the picture goes back to normal. I hope that helps.

I know you want to use the HDMI connection. Thats the rule in this hobby, use the best connection possible. HDMI is an incomplete standard thats why your having so many problems. My comments about the s-vid and composite are pure sarcasam. I'm suprised some one did not reccomend using a composite to RF converter(more sarcasm).

Do a search. A couple times a month some one with HDMI post about why their beautyful new reciever is not working right.

There seem to be two camps. The first camp is happy because their video sources are connected to the reciever with analog connections. The "upconverters only" crowd. These are the folks saying it's OK to buy a HDMI recievers. (SHAME ON YOU IF YOU ARE ONE OF THESE)

The second camp wants the best video, shells out the bucks to get the best, and are sorely dissapointed when the comcast box will not pass thru the reciever to get to that big beautiful display.

Oooo,Oooo,Oooo then you can put on the full strech to fill the black bars on the side. It only cost $X000 to see a distorted lo-rez picture on your HDMI reciever and Sharp HDTV. Don't forget the ISF calibration!

Who cares if a 1993 zenith has just as nice picture:) Maybe better because comcast had 200 less channels back then.

DVR can be set to either 720p or 1080i (the tv takes 720p, and will down-convert to 720p if it gets a 1080i).

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the Yamaha 2600 scale as well. Could this be a scaling incompatibility? Have you tried adjusting output resolution when hooked directly to the TV? I have to believe this is something other than the cable box not working (I could totally be wrong though. I didn't believe it when I was told the component output was better than the dvi output on the old boxes). One other question. Have you tried adjusting your HDMI signal type in your Sharp Menus? Page 31 of your manual. You have a couple of options under the HDMI Setup menu including signal type, and auto view. Try playing with these.

I think I'm the "sorely disappointed" kind.... ;) I've already decided I'm holding off on buying my next TV (I was going to go for a 1080p 45" Sharp LCD). This is my way of punishing the industry for putting me through hell. Until they can get their act straight, I ain't buying into the market again. I just wish everyone would hold back their $5,000 to make these companies pay attention to what we need....

HDMI Issue

The problem you are experiencing is that some Set-top boxes (Cable TV or Satellite TV boxes) do not recognize an HDMI Repeater device connected between itself and the Video Monitor. This is due to the Set-top box being older and the firmware was not written to understand any type of Repeater (switching) device such as the your Yamaha receiver. In order to fully incorporate the Yamaha receiver (or any other HDMI switching receiver) into your home theater, your Set-top box will need to be either replaced with a newer model or have a firmware upgrade installed. In order to resolve the issue with your set-top box, please contact the cable/satellite Customer Service Dept. and ask them to include "HDMI Repeater Support" in their boxes.

Ahhh - interesting! Thanks very much for this advice! This will perhaps help with not getting HD picture at all when I have DVR-into-Reciever-into-TV, but what do I do about the bad HD picture I get when it's just DVR-into-TV?
