Hey guys, newbie here. I have a question about my stereo. It is approx 26 years old. The setup was in storage and when I pulled it out not in complete working order. I have a M80, C80, tuner, Bose 901's and Bose equalizer.

When I got it out the M80 was not working so I had it fixed. I just got it back and tried the whole setup again. The C80 is giving me trouble and I verified it was no other components by bypassing the C80 and the rest worked excellent.

The C80 is sending a signal out and the M80 is receiving it. But the signal is very low, volume wise. Also it is very static and not at all clean and crisp.

It could just be I have one of the knobs set incorrectly because I am not at all an audio technician.

Thanks for the help.

PS. I also tried it with just headphones from the headphone jack and it was the same.

Welcome:D

Make sure the mute button is not pressed in, the loudness controller on the volume control is not on.

I did check the mute button,it's functioning and not on. I don't know what all the switches and knobs on the unit do, is there a manual I can download so I will know?

Hi, and welcome!

I came across the thread linked here at Audiokarma that seems to have some useful information. It also contains a link to the C-80 owner's manual (direct link here).

I'm blushing. Very kind of you, my man. I just feel bad that I didn't find that stuff last night when I looked.

Mtry knows his stuff (or came across that same info :)) - he already mentioned the loudness control on the volume knob.

Are we talking very low volume when the volume is turned well up?
Is the sound and static equally present on both channels?

To cover the bases it makes sense to start with the obvious. You could be hearing cross talk from a source other than the one your preamp is set to. Assuming you are listening to CD, check that the CD is plugged into the CD inputs and the source selector is set to CD. Also there should be a button or switch for the tape monitor. Make sure the volume is down to a reasonable level, and try flipping the tape monitor on-off. (some units use a knob for this, but you should see something labeled "Tape Monitor" or "Source vs Tape".
If it is not one of those, your pots and switches may need cleaning. Try just rapidly turning all of the knobs. Generally, the Volume knob or the Source knob are the most likely candidates if this is you problem.

Looking at your manal, It looks like the cluster of six buttons controls the source on your unit. So just make sure the button pressed corresponds to the inputs connected. Again, assuming CD player, try all of the inputs (except phono) with the corresponding button pressed. I know that while the knobs can almost always be revived, some of the buttons can be real problems to clean or replace.
