Yamaha amp, controls not working

I have a AX-596 Yamaha amp and it has Pure Direct and CD Direct features which bypass bass/treble/balance. With these features off I don't get any sound. I should get sound.

What is the Standby mode used for? I still can't figure it out.

I've had that happen with my Yamaha 3060, where for some reason when I switch to Pure Direct I don't get any sound. Turning the unit off and back on, did the trick for me. Or maybe you need to unplug the unit for a bit.
