It's actually spelled Carnac, which makes sense since it was Johnny Carson of course.
I've seen it spelled both ways I think, tho I knew what you meant. One of the sillier routines they did....and sometimes were comedy gold.

What are you saying? I have no bass management. Are you Karnak the Magnificent?
Strictly speaking he is correct. In your case your speakers are running full range, but the sub output is second order (12 db. per octave below 90 Hz). So the only control you have is the volume control on your sub. So it is "luck of the draw" whether this works well or not on a case by case basis. In other words, results may vary.

If I remember correctly, when I measured your speakers F3 was around 55 Hz, and since they are sealed roll off is 12db per octave and so is the sub out. So in effect you are close to a second order filter, and at those frequencies, as near as makes no difference.

The new amp does put out much stronger and tighter bass with the sub off compared to the RX-396. And the overall sound is crisper, punchier and seems to have more depth or dimension. It is a very big step-up. I had to screw in a couple of boards to get it to fit right.
But ok, I understand what Lovin was asking now. What about the freq knob? I have one RCA plugged in the LFE jack, Does that supersede the freq control? I did set it to 55 hz. I I cannot tell the diff using the phase switch. But the sub helps the room. I have it turned up to around 8 of 11 on the dial. I'll try that again this morning with another album and see if that's best.
But what's with the 11? I never noticed that until now. I also have a foot massager that goes to 11. Is that because of Spinal Tap? Of course 11 is louder than 10 ;).

The sub output optimal frequency is 50% above F3 of the speaker, so 90 Hz is about optimal. Then all you need to do is set the level on the sub amp. It is not complicated.

I never said it was complicated. In fact, I said I had it set up!

I wonder why scientists use blind tests when its simply a waste of their time? [sarcasm]

That is highly unlikely.
Considering I assume the previous unit similarly had an accurate, flat response and we are comparing solid state amps made by the same company, I'd tend to agree.

A flat FR is a prerequisite, but more then a flat FR is required for good sound. A lot of those older receivers and integrated amps had serious shortcomings, not withstanding a good FR. A lot of early solid state gear was not very good. The Quad 303 amp was the first solid state amp to be as good and actually a little better than tube amps. That was produced in 1967. It took the rest a long time to close the gap.
