yamaha 673 and BS22 pkg settings questions

I have Vt60 connected to yamaha 673 receiver via ARC.
I have BS22 pkg in 3.1 config.
Side Surrounds I have BS21s.
I have 2 TL1 in back surround.
That makes it 7.1

My default was 8 ohms and did not sound too good. That is what YPAO set up. YPAO also set all speakers to large. I know the Pioneers are 6 ohm and 8 for TL1.

I only have OTA right now and my trying to see if I get 5.1 on the speakers. It was not very good. Got no sound from the surrounds.

Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum!

For the impedance setting, I've read several people recommend that you should stick with the 8-ohm setting unless your receiver is going into self-protection mode and shutting down. The impedance switch is (as far as I know) just a current limiter. If you aren't playing things so loud as to overstress the amps, then you don't need to use it.

Auto calibration systems tend to set speakers to large even if they really aren't, so don't worry that it did that. Go into the setup menu and toggle your speakers to small and make sure that the sub is activated.

OTA broadcasts, at least in the U.S., are at most 5.1 audio. Shows (or sometimes anything broadcast over a specific channel) can certainly still be broadcast in stereo. Some stations either haven't upgraded or just don't want to use the bandwidth for surround sound. So, make sure that you are watching a source in surround sound. Also, even when there is 5.1 audio, it doesn't mean that there will always be sound going to the surround speakers (it will come and go over the duration of the show).

Page 80 of the Yamaha manual discusses their "Extended Surround" setting that will, if you want, convert 5.1 audio to 7.1 audio so that all of the speakers get used. By default, it's set to "Auto" and looks like it should be doing the conversion, but you can play around with that setting and force it to do it.

thanks adam.

What bothered me is that my cheapo sony HTIB with strwberry speakers was doing million times better sound than this monster speaker and receiver I bought. I regret buying this set now. caused monster holes on the drywall .. had trouble finding stud everywhere I wanted to put.

I was watching a CBS OTA game in prime time on Saturday and those are typically in 5.1

I wish I could buy HT-IS100. Its not even available now.

hey adam .. how would i rule out an issue with 673?

Is there a test audio I can play on USB to see if its performing well. If it performs well then we can rule out the 673 as the problem.

Ofcourse if it doesnt .. the issue could be the speakers or the 673.

Hi, JK. You should be able to play anything to test if it sounds good to you, and like you said - if it doesn't, it could be the receiver or the speakers.

I suspect that there's an issue with one or more of your settings, or maybe even connections. A cheapo HTIB shouldn't blow away that system. So, a couple of questions to start:

1. How do you have your TV connected to the Yamaha? Is it with an optical cable?

2. When you watch TV that you think should be in surround sound, what does the front display of the Yamaha say? I wondering if (a) it's getting a 5.1 signal and (b) if you have one of the Yamaha sound modes active (check out page 47 of your Yamaha manual if that doesn't sound familiar). If there's a sound mode active, it might be making it sound off to you.

As Adam suggested, the issue could be one of processing. On yamaha receivers the mode with no processing is the "straight" mode. You can switch to this by hitting the "straight" button on either the remote or the front of the receiver. This button will toggle between straight/processing so when you hit it read what the front of the receiver is saying and make sure it says "straight" and nothing else.

I've also known several people who found the automatic equalization that YPAO performs to sound subpar. After you've ensured that you've turned all processing off (and if you're still not happy) go into the EQ settings and change it from PEQ to OFF.

YPAO then adjust speakers to small.Check crossover... 80 Hz looks fine.

checked FM radio with 7ch stereo. Sound came from surrounds.

I wanted to check why OTA will not come in as 5.1 .. atleast did not hear it.

The ARC messes up what is displayed on TV. I am watching OTA (Antenna/Cable) with ARC thr HDMI2 of TV to Output HDMI of 673. Now to check -- I press Display on receiver remote. Guess what happens ... TV shows the setting you mention but input on TV has already changed to HDMI2 instead of Antenna/Cable.

Code shows PCM even though TV only allows me to set Antenna/Cable to PCM or Auto. I had set that to Auto.

Confused totally....

What do you mean by no processing for straight? No processing meaning it will not put signals in specific bucket to be sent to speaker?
What is difference between straight and direct?

Look at your TVs manual on how to connect it properly for ARC. Make sure all of the settings are correct as per the manual.

Direct bypasses all equalization and processing. When in direct mode the receiver takes the signal and puts it out to whatever speaker it's supposed to be put out to. In Straight mode you use the equalizers built into the receiver. When you put a DSP mode on [like 7ch stereo] the receiver messes with the sound. In 7ch stereo it takes a stereo signal [meant for front left/right] and plays it on all speakers [processing]. Other modes, like vienna concert hall, change the sound to give it an effect.

ARC is connected properly to HDMI2 on TV. HDMI2 of TV goes to OUTPUT HDMI of receiver.

I have similar Panny plasma connected to denon receiver thr ARC.

I am getting sound from the speakers. 3.1 works fine.

When you are watching TV, what exactly does the yamaha say in for audio info? Should say either PCM or Dolby Digital then have #/#/#
