What is the difference between the Yamaha 663 and the new model 665?

Here is a link to an overall summary comparison from Yamaha's site. There are a few differences, one being that the 665 has two more HDMI inputs. Another difference is that the 665 doesn't have any s-video inputs or outputs.

The 665 is substantially lighter than the 663. I'm betting they've further skimped on the amp section.

According to what I have been reading, this seems to be much more of the norm rather than the exception. More specifically, add more features albeit hdmi switching ins/outs, but it comes at a cost in the power supply section. Both Yamaha and Pioneer are doing this from what I garner. Guess, they have to make some cuts in the over-all design somewhere. The question is will Denon, Onkyo, HK, and etc. follow the same trend. I sure hope not.

Cheers,

Phil

The power ratings are also measured differently as well, also the display is blue instead of amber, and the buttons on the remote are only labled as an input, not as devices.

That is rather shocking. If I were going to buy one of them, I would want the RX-V663, and if I needed more HDMI inputs, I would buy the Oppo HDMI switch box.

From my understanding. The RX-V765 is the successor to the RX-V663, and the 665 is something between the 563 and 663.

Not really, they've just dumbed down amp sections in the new line. The 665 still maintains features reserved for the 66* line. Preouts are the largest stand out in this instance. They reduced the power supply to a 320va from a 400va. The RX-V763 and RX-V765 both have a 400va power supply.

The 763 in the UK site is the UK version of the 663.

What is the effect of reomving the amp section on the performance?

They didn't remove the amp section, they just aren't using as powerful of an amp, but as long as your speakers aren't terribly inefficient, you should still be ok. I believe the the 665 still has preamp outputs, so you can always add an external amp in the future.

That is what I meant.

I guess you are more right than I am, the Yamaha RX-V765 is closer in price to the RX-V663 than the RX-V863. While the MSRP on the RX-V765 is higher than the RX-V663 it's not nearly as high as the RX-V863.
