Yamaha 6.1 Matrix?

Hi, considering I'm a noob to the audio world, can anyone explain what the 6.1 matrix mode is on my 5.1 Yamaha receiver? Can it be used with all digital format dvds and what is the purpose of this mode, and is there any compromises when using it? My assumption is that it generates a simulated 6.1 channel audio track out of a 5.1 movie?

Your assumption is correct. It is likely that it can also simulate 6.1 from a 2 channel source.

Dolby ProLogic II and IIx, DTS:Neo6, Circle Surround, Logic7, etc are all examples of matrix decoders.

DD --> PLIIx or MATRIX

DTS -> NEO:6 or MATRIX
