Yamaha 5890 - right choice?

After having to scrap my plans for the 1015tx (due to no lip sync), I am now going to get the 5890. I can get it from an auth. dealer for $500. I can get the yamaha rx-v1500 from unauth. dealer for same price. I have heard they are very similar. Any reason not to get the 5890 over the 1500?
Thanks

Just note that the advertised 140 wpc is a lie. Somewhere in the back of the manual in small print they tell you the real wpc. Otherwise just cosmetic changes and I think the RX-V1500 has a pulldown cover on the front that reveals another set of composite inputs and some more dials.

Go read the yamaha website, they have an entire section devoted to explaining the differences.

The 140 wpc rating is the DIN rating (1 kHz at 8 ohms). The other rating is the FTC rating (20 - 20 kHz at 8 ohms). They might also include an EIAJ rating (a standard used in Japan). There are multiple standards for power ratings. Yamaha advertises the DIN rating for the HTR series but the FTC rating for the RX-V series.

Yamaha explains all of that on their website and that is the first place you should go for the answers. Download the manuals for each and read them. Then you will know for sure which one meets your needs better.

The 1500 has multiple zone's (better if you want to run speakers in other rooms). The amps are the same, both spec at 120x2 FTC. The 1500 would be my choice over the 5890 IF this unauthorized dealer threw in their own 1yr warranty. Otherwise, you're fine with the 5890.

RX-V1500 dealer

Bought my receiver (5860) from Electronics Expo, an authorized yamaha dealer. They had the RX-V 1500 listed as a retail item for $500. Not sure if you can order it over the phone or if you have to buy it from one of their NJ stores. They won't sell the RX-Vs online because they are authorized.

HTR-5890 good

I have been using the HTR-5890 for 4 months now. I am yet to find fault with this receiver.

Once you get you receiver, try this test. put in someting with audio (cd or dvd) and pause it. Now turn the volume all the way up. Hear anything? With the HTR-5890, I hear dead silence. That is the sign of a good amp inside.

Regarding power, never felt the lack of it, in fact, I had to move to a bigger apartment so that I could open out my setup :D , the speakers seem to work optimally only if a minimum SPL is output by them. But that has nothing to do with the amp.

Hope this helps in your decision.
