Yamaha 5790 Setup Questions

I'm setting up a Yamaha 5790 receiver with just my front L & R speakers and a Sub (constrained for room until we move later this year....when I'll setup the full system).

My question is: Can I use the Yamaha's auto setup feature (using the microphone that's included with the reciever) to setup this level of system? Is the receiver "smart" enough to know that I only have fronts and a sub and be able to send sound out accordingly? Or do I have to manually set it up until I have the full system in place and then let the receiver "tune" itself?

Also, just a technical question since I don't know a lot about the audio side of the equation......Is my sub going to be actively used for any source I play or does it have to be certain types of sound? By this I mean, should the sub produce some of the sound from TV shows or just from movies? What about from the radio or from CD's? Sorry...this probably seems like a lame question, but I just don't know the answer.

In the Speaker Setup menu you tell the receiver how many speakers you have so it will not be a problem using only fronts and a sub.

Whether the sub is active or not depends on the listening mode. For Stereo, the sub will be active. For 'Direct' or 'Pure Direct' it will not.
