Yamaha 4600/Pioneer Elite DVD displays PCM with DVD?

had a Samsung DVD player connected via HDMI to my Yamaha 4600 and never had a problem with decoding etc..it has recently stopped playing DVD's (plays audio CD's fine...) so I bought a Pioneer Elite DVD player, and connected to the same HDMI cable...now my question is that no matter what settings I chose on the disc 5.1DTS, Dolby 5.1 etc.., my Receiver interprets the input as "PCM", were as before it would appropriately select which format was being sent ("digital", "DTS") etc.....is this normal?

What about the settings on the player (not the disc itself)?

The player should be set to output 'bitstream'. If it is set to output PCM it will do the decoding and send PCM to the receiver.

the options were locked when I tried to change them before
I found my error and all is better than ever
