Yamaha 2600 Problem - or maybe just me??

I think I have a problem with the audio connection between my DTV STB and the Yamaha 2600 and my PS2 and the Yamaha 2600.

I have them both hooked up via optic but the 2600 doesn't display a 5.1 soundtrack for either - just 2 channel? The DVD player (hooked up via Coax) displays that it is sending 5.1, and I've changed this to optic to check, but 5.1 still worked ok as well!

I've tried numerous movies on the PS2 with no luck. They all come across as Dolby Digital 2.0. And so far the STB also has displayed everything as Dolby Digital 2.0.

Have I done something incorrectly, or do I have an authentic problem?

Thanks in advance :)

Assuming you have correctly assigned the input selectors to the optical or coax jacks from which they should get the sound (sounds like you did if you at least see DD 2.0) the consider this:

1. Not all cable broadcasts are DD 5.1. Many are DD 2.0 and some are even 48 kHz PCM, at least on my Time Warner cable.

2. I think the PS/2 has a menu setting you have to set for it to output digital, but not many games have DD 5.1.

Try playing a DVD movie that you know is 5.1. If the receiver and player are setup correctly, you should see 5.1 on the display, unless you have the receiver set to Stereo.

PVOIGT: are you getting any Subs sound from the problem connections? I had a similar problem, and it turned out that my Optical connections were faulty except for the DTV connection.. I had to bring it back and they replaced the receiver ...

Also.. just to clarify.. the "L " "R" you see on the receiver display is only the input indicator, meaning its receiving a 2 channel input stream... The receiver can then be instructed to output that signal in Dolby Prologic etc... and then you will hear sounds from all your surround speakers..

Try connecting the optical cable from your DVD to each of the optical connections and change the receiver to point to the correct optical connection to see if ALL you Optical connection are working correctly...

PS2 definately not working with 2600

The DTV could merely be a non 5.1 source as suggested.

But the PS2 connection is definately an issue. I have Optical Digital Out selected in the PS2 Menu and I have Optical In selected in the Yamaha 2600 input menu.

I tested Gladiator which has DD 5.1 & DTS 5.1, and both of these had only L&R inputs showing ie 2.0. When I played this on my Denon 2900 DVD player, they both showed 5.1 input signal. Even more strange was that the receiver didn't even show the DTS symbol when using the PS2 with the DTS 5.1 audio.

Interestingly, I popped GTA Vice City in the PS2 as I knew this had a DTS audio option. This showed a 4.1 input signal on the receiver.

What's going on?

I had a similiar problen with my 2600. Turned out to be the DVD player. It was set to 2 channel input (From when I had a DSP without 5.1)

Actually Sub out is in trouble!!!

I did some more testing last night, and while it is working somewhat, the sub signal from my PS2 wired up to the 2600 as apposed to the 2092 must be about 1/2 at best.

Very dissapointing. Still haven't been able to solve the 5.1 issue either. I've tried numerous setups and discs, but they all result in only DD 2.0.

The only setting available on the PS2 is a selection for Optical Digital Out, and this worked fine on my RXV2092, but with the RXV 2600 - nada
