Just finished setting up the Yammaha 2500 and notice that the zone 2 & zone 3 indicators are lit on the display. I can turn off zone 2,but not zone 3. Is this normal or is there a way too turn both off ? BTW, I,m not using either zone.
Thanks

You can turn off the zone 2 light with the zone 2 switch beneath the door on the front panel - there is a toggle on/off button on the right side.

Someone else with more knowledge will have to answer the zone 3 light question.

Thanks Orcasite for ur reply! After fooling around a bit last nite I found the on/off button to turn off zone 2,but zone 3 indicator stay's lit. I don't know if the indicators are supposed to lite up when these zones aren't being used.

I've looked thru the manual several times to no avail. The only mentioned about the indicator lites in the manual, says that they light up when Zone 2 or Zone 3 power is on. I'm not using either zone 2 or zone 3!

Go to manual and look at section concerning remote control and zones. If I recall correctly I entered code 2001 according to pg 64 in manual. This will turn on main channels via remote but when I turn on rcv'r via button on unit itself all zone indicaors light up. Try entering the code and don't worry about messing things up as you can follow instructions on how to undo a program set on remote.

E-mailed Yamaha tech support and they e-mailed me back with the procedure to set-up the remote to turn off both zones.

Setting up Zone 2 & 3 on the RX-V2500 remote

1. Set the REC OUT/ZONE 2 dial on the front panel of the
RX-V2500 to SOURCE/REMOTE.
2. Set the AMP/SOURCE/TV switch to Source.
3. Press the DVD input button.
4. Press and hold the Learn button gently with a paper clip
for 3 seconds. You will see L:DVD
and DVD will flash alternatively on the remote LCD
window.
5. Press the arrow to the right button until you see
L:AMP.
6. Press Enter and `2000` will appear in the remote LCD
window.
7. Enter in `2001`.
8. Press Enter to set the number. `OK` will appear in the
remote LCD window if the setting
was successful.
9. Press the Learn button to complete the Zone setup.
10. Select the `Source Select` up button to see Zone 2 and
press `Standby`, that will power
off Zone 2.
11. Press the `Source Select` button up one more time and to
Zone 3 and press `Standby`.

Smiley face is supposed to be colon, can't get rid of it. LOL

Much thanks!

Gazer:

I read your last post, printed it out, and took it to my 2500 - did exactly as you said - and voila! it worked! Much appreciated...

I assume that if I am not using zones 2 and 3 at the moment - that is, having no speakers hooked up to them, then putting them into "standby" mode will leave them "off" and will use less power, generate less heat, and generally preserve the life of the unit? Correct?

I am still learning all the many features of this receiver, but can already hear a large improvement in the sound quality. I have some new Axioms for the fronts and center speakers, but am using some old Bose 201 for surrounds at the moment, but the sound quality is so much better, I think I will soon be buying both a subwoofer and some matched Axiom surround speakers.

While this forum has been a true wealth of good information, it has had a negative impact on my financial wealth, but has greatly increased my enjoyment of music and DVDs. All-in-all, a valuable trade-off - as I think I am getting real value for my money as opposed to all the many ways to spend it that gives no lasting impact.

Thanks again for your researching this and for posting your findings.

Orca,

Glad I could help, don't know if you noticed yet,but you will have to turn off the zones everytime you power on the receiver. I guess that turning off the zones with the remote only works when it's on,when you turn off the power and turn it back on the indicator lights will be lit. There doesn't seem to be a way to turn off the zones permanently until you need them. Hope this makes sense.

Matches my experience.

Gazer:

Yep, a rather annoying design flaw, don't you think? Oh well, I guess I shouldn't buy such a complicated and sophisticated receiver if I didn't expect to use all its features...

Never-the-less, I am very much enjoying the sound that it is producing and continue to explore the rich variety of possibilities that are to be found in the combination of well recorded DVDs and CDs and a solid sound system. I have ordered a few SACDs to see what they sound like.

Enjoy the music...!

Gazer,

This only happens when you turn the unit on using the power button on the front of the unit. If you turn it on with the remote instead it will not power on zone 2 and zone 3 again.

Doug917:

You're right! Once I have programmed the Yammy remote as outlined in Glazer's earlier post, and turned off zones two and three, the Yammy remote's "standby" and "system power" buttons will turn the main off and on, leaving zones two and three always off. Great!

However, I have programed my Harmony 676 remote to turn on the Yammy, along with the appropriate TV/DVD/CD/Dish811/VCR. When I press the Harmony remote's "power on" button, the Yammy main amp comes on and so does zones two and three. Clearly, I will need to find the specific Yammy code that allows me to turn it on/off with the Harmony, leaving zones two and three off.

Orcasite,

I also use a Harmony 676 remote and have the same problem when turning the 2500 on with the remote. Please post if you get it solved as this information would be valuable to me as well.

I got it to work.. but I'm not sure I can explain how.

Doug917:

I managed to get the Harmony to learn the Yamaha remote's "system power" code so that the Harmony now turns the "main on" amp only and leaves zones 2 & 3 off. I did it by going into the Harmony site, checking on the "more options" link next to the "Stereo Receiver" image. Then I followed the "learn commands" link to teach the Harmony the code emitted by the yammy remote for the "system power" button.

It all a bit complex and I wish I had kept a step-by-step record of exactly how it is done and I wish you good luck in doing it! If you have difficulties, you can get a Harmony tech on the phone and the ones I spoke to when I had some difficulties which I first set up the Harmony were excellent.

If you have any real difficulties, and can't get help from the techs at Harmony, let me know and I will try to replicate my method step-by-step to help you.

Good luck...

I'm assuming you made it to step 4? If so:

5. Press the arrow to the right button until you see L:AMP.
Press right arrow button to change reading to L:AMP.

Then Step 6.

Pg 79 in manual defines this.
